Dental Care Ireland Killarney Wins Award
Dental Care Ireland Killarney Wins ‘Caring Dental Team of the Year 2023’. We are thrilled to announce that Dental Care Ireland Killarney, formerly Fuller Dental, has been awarded Colgate’s Caring Dental Team of the Year for 2023. This family-oriented practice, led by brothers Dr. David and Dr. Declan Fuller, is setting new standards for patient care in Kerry.
A Commitment to Patient Care
Dental Care Ireland Killarney were nominated for Colgate’s Caring Dental Team of the Year by a patient with chronic pain syndrome and arthritis. In nominating, their patient said “Their exceptional patience and flexibility in accommodating the patient’s unique challenges, set them apart. In addition, their commitment to providing emergency care during the pandemic showcases a dedication to the well-being of their patients.”
The patient, who has been attending Dental Care Ireland Killarney for many years, expressed gratitude for the exceptional care they received from the Fuller brothers and their team. “Despite facing the challenges of managing chronic pain and utilising crutches for mobility, the team’s unwavering patience and understanding is greatly appreciated. There were instances when I had to cancel appointments on short notice due to the immense pain, the team always displayed remarkable compassion. During the pandemic, the team ensured I received the necessary emergency care that I needed.”
At Dental Care Ireland, care is at the centre of everything we do. This is why the Colgate Caring Dental Team Award is such a great acknowledgement for our Killarney team. This is Dental Care Ireland’s second major award of 2023, it comes on the back of ‘Employer of The Year’ at The Irish Dentistry Awards in September.
The Colgate Recognition
Colgate’s Caring Dental Team of the Year award is a prestigious accolade that recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of dentistry. Dental Care Ireland Killarney’s achievement reflects the team’s commitment to excellent and patient care.
Talking about the award, Dr. David Fuller says “An award of any sort is great at any time, but such recognition from one’s patients and one’s peers magnifies that accolade wonderfully. It’s a huge boost to our team, and we’d like to thank everyone involved. This includes the Dental Care Ireland group, who I’d like to thank for the technology investment, but always allowing us to prioritise patient care at all times”.
The Fuller Brothers: Caring Kerrymen
At the heart of Dental Care Ireland Killarney are the Fuller brothers, Dr. David and Dr. Declan. Born and bred in Killarney, Dr. David graduated from UCC in 1978 and set up Fuller Dental in 1980. His brother, Dr. Declan joined him at Fuller Dental in 1998 and the brothers have been providing dental care to the people of Killarney ever since.

Dental Sedation is Now Available at Callan Dental
Dental sedation is offered at Callan Dental for patients who suffer high amounts of fear, anxiousness or nervousness about dental treatment. Dr Jennifer Huston offers both IV and inhalation sedation at Callan Dental. Sedation is offered for all treatments apart from the initial examination.
Types of Sedation at Callan Dental
Nitrous Oxide Sedation (Happy Air): Nitrous Oxide Sedation is a gas sedative that helps patients relax during their dental procedures. It is administered through a mask and wears off quickly after the procedure.
IV Sedation: Intravenous Sedation (IV Sedation) is an option for patients who need a higher level of sedation. It is administered directly into the bloodstream, ensuring a comfortable and anxiety-free experience.
Below, Dr Jennifer Huston has answered some of your frequently asked questions about sedation at Callan Dental.
Am I suitable for dental sedation?
Dental sedation is an option for those who suffer with high amounts of fear, nervousness or anxiety about dental treatments. This can be used for treatments such as simple extractions, surgical extractions, restorations and cleanings. While there is no specific treatment that requires dental sedation, you may want to avail of the option if you do experience anxiety when undergoing dental treatment. It all depends on your wants and needs as a patient. While there is no upper age limit for dental sedation, a patient must be at least 18 years of age for IV Sedation, and Nitrous Oxide Sedation is available from approximately the age of 6 years old, based on suitability assessment at the consultation. Each patients suitability will be carefully assessed, taking into consideration their medical history.
How safe is dental sedation?
Dental sedation is very safe. Before booking a treatment with sedation, patients must attend a consultation appointment. Your dentist will discuss your medical history with you before administering it to make sure that you do not have any conditions which could make it an issue.
What do I need to do before sedation?
Before your dental sedation, you should not:
● Consume alcohol 24 hours before the appointment
Before your dental sedation, you can:
● Take any prescription medicines as normal; the dentist will have already checked that these are compatible with the sedative used.
● Have a light, non fatty meal (for example, toast).
Is there anything I need to prepare coming into the appointment?
● You should wear flat heeled shoes coming to the appointment as you will be unsteady on your feet for a couple of hours following the sedation visit. You should also not wear any nail varnish or false nails as we need to place a pulse monitor on your finger that shines a light through your fingernail during the treatment.
Do I need to have somebody with me?
Yes. You must bring a responsible adult with you to the sedation visit. They must remain in the practice during your treatment and must escort you home. We will not be able to carry out the sedation treatment unless this person is present. This is a legal requirement of the laws governing Dental Treatment under IV Sedation.
What do I need to do after sedation?
After your treatment, it is important that you:
● Have a responsible adult with you for 24 hours
● Do not drive a vehicle for 24 hours.
● Do not operate machinery
● Do not look after small children
● Do not carry out any dangerous tasks requiring concentration for 24 hours
● Do not consume alcohol or sleeping tablets for 24 hours
● We will keep you in our waiting room or in the dental chair as the sedative starts to wear off. Generally this only takes between 15-30 minutes.
Will I feel sick afterwards?
No. Unlike a general anaesthetic, there is usually no feeling of nausea afterwards. This is due to the fact that very different drugs are used. However, you will have a very good night’s sleep following your sedation.

Improving Smiles in the West of Ireland
Dental Implants are now available in the West!
Up to now, people who needed or wanted dental implants had to travel out of the West of Ireland for treatment. However, thanks to Dental Care Ireland practices in the West, it’s now possible to get this procedure in your own locality. Dental Care Ireland practices in Tuam, Claregalway, Westport and Castlebar now offer dental implants for people who have lost teeth, whether it’s due to injury, decay, or other factors.
Dr Ricardo Trindade carries out implant dentistry in these four practices. He qualified in dentistry in his native Portugal and followed this up with practice and further study in the UK and Sweden. He has been working with implants for 19 years and is also deeply involved in implant research in Sweden having gained his PhD from the renowned Sahlgrenska Academy, the world-renowned pioneering centre in implant dentistry. He has a passion for his work and takes great pride in providing quality care for his patients. Dr Trindade understands that every patient has unique needs and aims to provide tailored dental implant treatment plans that meet those specific needs.
Dr Trindade now brings his expertise and experience to the West of Ireland operating out of our four Dental Care Ireland practices here. Dr Trindade wants patients to have a renewed confidence in their smile and lose the awkwardness of missing teeth.
People are living longer than ever, and while regular brushing, flossing, and check-ups allow many of us to maintain our natural smiles for a lifetime, sometimes our teeth just can’t keep up. If you’ve lost a tooth (or a few teeth) due to injury or disease, dental implants can rejuvenate both your smile and your oral health.
An implant is a synthetic tooth root in the shape of a post that is surgically placed into the jawbone. The “root” is usually made of titanium; the same material used in many replacement hips and knees, and a metal that is well-suited to pairing with human bone. A replacement tooth is then fixed to the post. And the best part? They’ll look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth. With the installation of artificial teeth that closely match real ones, eating and speaking with ease will be the same as before you lost your teeth.
If you are interested in dental implants, Dr Trindade can assess your suitability and talk you through your treatment with an easy to book consultation. Ready to take charge of your oral health and feel good about your smile? Don’t let missing teeth hold you back any longer. Book your consultation today in Westport, Castlebar, Tuam or Claregalway and avail of the expertise of Dr Trindade.

Meet an Orthodontist
Dr Heraclio Alves Barbosa Junior, also known as Leo, is the Orthodontist at Dental Care Ireland Ashbourne. He graduated in 1996 as a general dentist, and right after he got accepted into the Orthodontics Program in Brazil. Today, he has more than 20 years of experience in Orthodontics and treats patients of all ages in our Ashbourne practice.
Below, Dr Leo has told us about his role as an Orthodontist.
What does an Orthodontist do?
Orthodontists specialise in aligning and straightening your teeth. This is done with various orthodontic treatments, such as traditional metal braces or clear ceramic braces.
What is the difference between an Orthodontist and a Dentist?
Well, Orthodontists are still Dentists, but an Orthodontist has specialised in moving teeth through orthodontic treatments. Just like a General Dentist, I work with patients of all ages, but the majority of my patients tend to be young people as this is usually when people seek orthodontic treatment. However, people of all ages do receive orthodontic treatment.
What initially attracted you to become an Orthodontist?
I began studying dentistry because I’ve always wanted to help improve people’s smiles, and make them smile more! I realised that orthodontics has a big role to play in this. You often see patients’ confidence completely transform after orthodontic treatment, which is really amazing.
What is your favourite part about being an Orthodontist?
As I said, I love helping people achieve the smile they want and deserve. Ultimately, this really is my favourite part about being an Orthodontist. The joy of giving a patient a new smile is really enjoyable.
What advice would you give to patients who are considering orthodontic treatment for themselves or their children?
Start as soon as possible! When it comes to orthodontic treatments, early intervention is key. While orthodontics are effective for people of all ages, it’s certainly easier to treat younger patients. This is because they are still growing, and so the teeth and bone structure is easier to align. It’s worth at least booking a consultation to consider all of your options.
What are the main benefits of orthodontic treatment?
There are many benefits to orthodontic treatments, mainly aesthetics, confidence and function. Aesthetically, patients opt for orthodontic treatment to straighten their smile and close any gaps that may bother them. This, in turn, tends to boost a patient’s confidence.
When it comes to functionality, orthodontic treatment is great as it helps to properly align the teeth in the mouth, meaning the bite function is improved, and oral health is improved as teeth become easier to floss and clean!
Are you interested in orthodontic treatment in Ashbourne? Book your consultation with Dr Leo today online or by calling our practice directly on (01) 835 0344.
