Braces Myths Busted: The Truth about Kids Braces
There is an abunace of myths surronding braces, especially when it comes to kids braces. As a parents or caregiver, it’s important to get the facts straight before making any decisions about orthodontic care. Dr Gina Kilfeather, Group Orthodontic Advisor at Dental Care Ireland is here to bust some of the most common braces myths and give you the truth behind these popular misconceptions.
Myth #1: Kids Braces are just for cosmetic purposes
While braces do improve the appearance of teeth, their main purpose is to address alignment issues that affect your child’s oral health. Misaligned teeth can lead to biting, chewing and speaking problems as well as an increased risk of tooth decay, gum disease and jaw pain.
Myth #2: Braces are painful
During treatment, some discomfort may occur when braces are first put on or adjusted. However, this is usually manageable and temporary. Any soreness typically lasts a few days and can be relieved with over-the-counter pain relief. Today’s braces are designed for maximum comfort.
Myth #3: Kids should wait until they’re teenagers to get Braces
Orthodontic treatments can begin as early as age seven. Early intervention can help identify issues such as overcrowding or bite problems before they become more difficult to fix. Addressing these problems earlier rather than later often leads to quicker and less invasive treatment.
Myth #4: Braces are high mainteanance
Braces do require more care than regular teeth, however it is not as hard as people may think! Brushing after every meal and avoiding sticky or hard foods will keep braces clean and functional. Flossing and regular dental visits are also important to maintain oral health.
Myth #5: Treatment with Braces takes years
While treatment duration can vary, many cases are completed in one to three years. With advancements in orthodontic technology, treatment is becoming even faster and more efficient.

Menopause & Your Mouth: What You Should Know
Menopause is a significant life transition, marked by the end of menstrual cycles and a range of menopause symptoms that affect every part of the body – including your mouth. While hot flushes and mood swings often take the spotlight, oral health changes can be just as impactful. In this blog, Dr Jennifer Collins, Group Clinical Director for Dental Care Ireland, explores how the hormonal shifts of menopause can influence your dental well-being and offers practical advice to keep your smile bright during this new chapter.
How Hormones Influence Oral Health
The dip in oestrogen and progesterone levels during menopause doesn’t just trigger classic menopause symptoms such as night sweats or sleep disturbances —it can also lead to:
- Dry mouth (xerostomia): Reduced saliva flow increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
- Burning mouth syndrome: A scalding sensation on the tongue, lips or palate, often without visible signs.
- Gum sensitivity: Fluctuating hormones can make gums more prone to inflammation and bleeding.
Even subtle changes in saliva composition can undermine the natural cleansing and remineralisation processes your mouth relies on.
Common Oral Menopause Symptoms
Persistent Dryness
One of the most common menopause symptoms is dry mouth, or xerostomia, which occurs when saliva production decreases. This can lead to a sticky feeling on your tongue, difficulty swallowing, and an altered taste. The lack of saliva also increases the risk of cavities and gum disease, as it plays a crucial role in neutralising acids and washing away food particles. If you experience persistent dryness, it’s important to discuss it with your dentist, who can recommend saliva substitutes or special oral care products.
Burning or Tingling Sensations
Another issue during menopause is “burning mouth syndrome,” where women experience a painful, tingling heat in the mouth, especially when eating acidic or spicy foods. This discomfort may affect the tongue, gums, and roof of the mouth. It’s thought to be linked to hormonal changes, particularly a decrease in estrogen. Managing this sensation may involve dietary adjustments and using mild mouth rinses or medications to relieve the discomfort.
Inflamed and Bleeding Gums
Hormonal changes during menopause can cause your gums to become inflamed and more prone to bleeding, even with regular brushing and flossing. This increased sensitivity is due to the drop in estrogen levels, which makes gum tissue more vulnerable. If you notice your gums bleeding, it’s essential to be gentle with your oral hygiene routine and visit your dentist. If left untreated, this can lead to gum disease or more severe oral health issues.
Loose Teeth or Bone Loss
Oestrogen helps maintain bone density, including in the jawbone. During menopause, a decrease in oestrogen can lead to bone thinning, which may cause your teeth to feel looser or shift. This bone loss can contribute to tooth instability over time. To support bone health, ensure you’re consuming enough calcium and vitamin D and visit your dentist regularly for check-ups to monitor any signs of bone loss.
Altered Taste
Many women notice changes in their sense of taste during menopause. This can result in a metallic or bitter taste that can make eating and drinking less enjoyable. Though this is usually temporary, it can affect appetite and food choices. If your taste buds are changing, it’s worth discussing with your healthcare provider to determine if the changes are related to menopause or other factors.
Practical Tips to Safeguard Your Smile
- Boost Saliva Production
- Sip water throughout the day.
- Chew sugar-free gum containing xylitol.
- Use saliva substitutes or mouth sprays as recommended by your dentist.
- Gentle, Consistent Oral Hygiene
- Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste.
- Floss or use interdental brushes once a day to keep gums healthy.
- Consider an alcohol-free, therapeutic mouthwash to soothe sensitivity.
- Balanced Diet for Bone and Gum Health
- Ensure adequate calcium and vitamin D intake (milk, leafy greens, fortified cereals).
- Limit sugary and acidic foods that exacerbate dry mouth.
- Include nutrient-rich foods—such as dairy, oily fish and nuts—to support bone density.
- Regular Dental Check-ups
- Schedule visits every six months—or more often if you have existing gum issues.
- Alert your dentist to any new menopause symptoms in your mouth so they can adjust your treatment plan.
- Lifestyle and Stress Management
- Quit smoking if you haven’t already; it worsens dry mouth and gum disease.
- Explore relaxation techniques (yoga, meditation) to help with stress-induced teeth grinding.

Reveal Your Brightest Smile: Teeth Whitening at Dental Care Ireland Kilkenny
A healthy, bright smile is one of the best ways to build self-confidence — and it’s often one of the first things people notice. Over time, our teeth can become stained or discoloured due to our morning coffees or evening red wine, among other things. Fortunately, professional teeth whitening treatments can safely and effectively restore your smile’s natural sparkle.
At Dental Care Ireland, patients can benefit from a personalised whitening treatment designed for both comfort and long-lasting results — Dr Shahriar Khorshid, a General Dentist at our Kilkenny practice is here to answer all your teeth whitening questions!
Dentist vs Over-the-Counter Teeth Whitening
Unlike over-the-counter products, professional teeth whitening provides a more controlled and reliable result. Dr Shahriar and the DCI Kilkenny team offer whitening treatments that are customised to each patient, ensuring a safe application and effective results without damaging enamel or causing unnecessary sensitivity.
The whitening process targets both surface stains and deeper discolouration within the tooth, helping to significantly brighten your natural shade. With expert guidance, you can achieve a noticeably whiter smile in a matter of days — all from the comfort of your own home!
According to Dr Shahriar, choosing to opt with teeth whitening treatments at the dentist versus buying an over-the-counter product is more effective, safe and gives patients better results.
Traditionally, dentists produce a stronger result by using more powerful products and safer techniques than those found in store-bought options. The treatment tends to allow whitening results to last much longer and the majority of patients notice results at a quicker rate.
What to Expect: The Teeth Whitening Process
Every whitening journey at Dental Care Ireland Kilkenny begins with a full dental consultation led by Dr Shahriar. He will examine your teeth, gums, and overall oral health to check for issues like tooth decay, gum disease, or sensitivity that may need addressing before whitening.
It’s important to note that teeth whitening only works on natural teeth! If you have crowns, veneers, or tooth-colored fillings, inform your dentist beforehand for appropriate advice.
Once cleared for whitening, impressions of your teeth are taken to create custom whitening trays. These clear, plastic trays fit comfortably over your teeth, ensuring even coverage of the whitening gel while reducing leakage and gum irritation. On average, the trays are ready within a working week. You return to collect your whitening kit and receive tailored usage instructions from Dr Shahriar or a team member.
The at-home whitening process involves applying a specially formulated whitening gel to the trays and wearing them daily, typically for one hour or overnight, as advised by your dentist. Most patients notice results within 7–14 days. Temporary sensitivity may occur but can usually be managed with sensitive toothpaste or adjusted treatment frequency.
Long-Lasting Results and Maintenance
When it comes to maintaining your new brighter and whiter smile, Dr Shahriar advises patients to avoid stain-inducing foods and drinks, and to follow a consistent oral hygiene routine. Dental Care Ireland Kilkenny also offers top-up whitening gel, so you can refresh your results whenever needed — easily and effectively!

Located in the heart of Kilkenny town, Dental Care Ireland Kilkenny is a modern, patient-focused practice offering a full range of dental services. Orthodontic Care for Kids: Smiles That Last a Lifetime
Are you researching kid’s braces?
Dr Alex has all of your answers!
At Dental Care Ireland Cabinteely, we believe every child deserves a smile they can feel confident about. With years of experience in kids braces, Dr Alex Lite offers tailored treatments starting from age five. Let’s explore why early orthodontic care can make a world of difference for your child.
Why Start Orthodontic Care Early?
Children’s teeth and jaws are still growing, which means that early intervention can guide their development. Starting orthodontic assessments around age five allows us to:
- Spot Potential Problems Early: Issues like overcrowding, bite misalignment, and jaw growth discrepancies can be identified and treated very easily without invasive treatments before they become more severe.
- Simplify Future Treatment: Early care can often reduce the need for more complex treatments later, such as extractions or surgery.
- Boost Confidence: Correcting a child’s smile early can prevent teasing and build self-esteem during critical developmental years.
Signs Your Child May Need Orthodontic Care
While regular check-ups with your family dentist are essential, some signs might suggest the need for orthodontic care:
- Crowded or overlapping teeth or lack of gaps in the primary teeth.
- Jaw deviation or protrusion.
- Prolonged thumb sucking or pacifier use.
- Difficulty biting or chewing or swallowing.
- Teeth grinding or clenching.
- Early or late loss of baby teeth.
- Noticeable jaw misalignment or clicking sounds.
If you notice any of these signs, an orthodontic consultation with Dr Alex Lite could be the next step.
What to Expect During the First Visit
Dr Alex Lite ensures that every child’s first visit is a comfortable and positive experience. Here’s what happens:
- Initial Consultation: We take time to get to know you and your child, addressing any concerns you may have.
- Comprehensive Exam: A detailed assessment of your child’s, face, breathing, teeth, gums, jaw, and overall oral health is conducted.
- Treatment Plan: If treatment is needed, we create a customised plan tailored to your child’s specific needs and explain every step.
Kid-Friendly Orthodontic Solutions
Dr Alex Lite offers a range of kids braces, including:
- Neuro-occlusal rehabilitation: When adult teeth are not erupted yet and there are jaw discrepancies, this effective and non-invasive treatment can prevent major problems such as jaw surgery.
- Removable Appliances: Perfect for guiding jaw development or addressing simple alignment issues.
- Braces: Available in child-friendly designs to make the experience fun and engaging.
- Clear Aligners: Ideal for kids and teenagers as they can remove them to eat and brush their teeth, while moving their teeth and jaw without discomfort.
Building Healthy Habits Together
Orthodontic care is a partnership between Dr Alex Lite, your child, and you as parents. We work together to:
- Emphasise the importance of good oral hygiene building good habits for their future.
- Encourage regular check-ups and adjustments.
- Foster a positive attitude towards dental care.
Book Your Kids Braces Consultation Today
Dr Alex Lite is committed to helping children achieve smiles that last a lifetime. If you’re ready to start your child’s journey to better oral health and confidence, schedule a consultation today at Dental Care Ireland Cabinteely. Before & Afters

Understanding PRSI Dental Entitlements in 2025
For many people in Ireland, understanding how your PRSI (Pay Related Social Insurance) contributions can benefit you at the dentist is crucial for maintaining good oral health. Whether you have been availing of these benefits for years or are new to the workforce, it is helpful to keep up to date with the latest information. In 2025, the PRSI scheme continues to provide support to eligible individuals looking to manage their dental care costs.
What Is the PRSI Dental Scheme?
The PRSI Dental Scheme, administered by the Department of Social Protection, helps qualifying PRSI contributors to save on essential dental treatments. Under this scheme, eligible patients are entitled to:
- One free dental examination per year
- A subsidised scale and polish, or where clinically necessary, a periodontal treatment
The PRSI scheme is designed to encourage preventative care and early detection of dental issues, helping to keep treatment costs as low as possible for you over the long term.
Who Is Eligible in 2025?
Eligibility for PRSI dental entitlements depends on your PRSI contribution history. The general rule is:
- You must be currently paying PRSI in Class A, E, P, H, or S.
- You must have a minimum number of paid contributions – usually 39 weeks of PRSI payments made over a specified timeframe.
- You can also qualify if you are a dependent spouse or civil partner of an eligible person, provided certain conditions are met.
The good news is that once you are approved for the scheme, you can claim the benefits annually. If you are unsure about your eligibility, you can check by contacting Dental Care Ireland or the Department of Social Protection directly.
How to Check Your Entitlements?
Contact your local Dental Care Ireland practice – We can help you verify whether you meet the requirements. Our friendly team will take some basic details and check the Department of Social Protection’s records to confirm your eligibility.
What Does It Cost?
- Dental Examination: The annual check-up is fully covered by the PRSI scheme for eligible patients.
- Scale and Polish: The scheme covers part of the cost. If the cost of either cleaning or periodontal treatment is more than €42, you must pay the balance – it is capped at €15 for a scale and polish. There is no cap on the balance charged for periodontal treatment.
If you require more extensive treatments beyond what is covered by PRSI entitlements, your dentist will discuss the costs with you in advance.
Why Use Your Entitlements?
- Prevention Is Better Than Cure: Regular check-ups help catch any dental issues early, often making treatment less invasive and less expensive.
- Improved Oral Health: A scale and polish can greatly improve gum health, reduce plaque build-up, and help prevent tooth decay.
- Save Money: Availing of your annual entitlements ensures you are making the most out of your PRSI contributions.
How Dental Care Ireland Can Help?
At Dental Care Ireland, we are committed to making the PRSI process as smooth as possible. Whether you are a new or returning patient, our team provides comprehensive services including:
- Quick eligibility checks and assistance with relevant paperwork
- Friendly advice and guidance on your entitlements
- High-quality dental care
Next Steps
If you have not yet availed of your PRSI entitlements this year, consider booking an appointment at your local Dental Care Ireland practice. Our experienced dentists and dedicated support team will guide you through the process, ensuring you get the best possible care under the scheme.

Overcoming Dental Anxiety with Sedation at Callan Dental
At Dental Care Ireland’s Callan practice, we understand that for many, dental visits can be stressful. Whether it’s the fear of the procedure, the sound of the equipment, or a general anxiety about the dentist, these feelings can prevent people from seeking the care they need. That’s why we have sedation dentists who offer options to help make dental treatments more comfortable and stress-free.
Sedation Options for a Comfortable Experience
We provide two sedation methods to cater to different needs:
- Nitrous Oxide Sedation (Happy Air): This is a gas-based sedative that helps patients relax during their procedures. Administered via a mask, it wears off quickly, allowing you to resume your day shortly after treatment.
- IV Sedation: For those requiring a deeper level of relaxation, IV sedation is administered directly into the bloodstream, ensuring a more profound and anxiety-free experience.
Is Sedation Right for You?
Sedation is ideal for patients experiencing significant anxiety about their dental treatments. It can be used for a wide range of procedures, from routine cleanings to more complex surgeries, and is available to both adults and children (from around age 6, depending on suitability). During your consultation, your dentist will assess your medical history and personal needs to determine the best sedation option for you.
Preparing for Sedation
To ensure the best results, there are a few things to keep in mind before your appointment:
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours prior to treatment.
- Take prescribed medications as usual.
- Eat a light meal beforehand, avoiding fatty foods.
Additionally, please wear flat, comfortable shoes as you may feel unsteady after the procedure, and remove any nail varnish to allow for monitoring during treatment.
Aftercare and Recovery
After your sedation treatment, you’ll need to rest and recover:
- A responsible adult must accompany you to and from your appointment.
- Avoid driving, operating machinery, or caring for small children for 24 hours.
The effects of sedation typically wear off within 15-30 minutes, and there’s usually no feeling of nausea, making it a safer alternative to general anaesthesia.
Why Choose Callan Dental?
Both our sedation dentists, Dr. Jennifer Huston and Dr. Aoife Farrell are highly experienced in sedation dentistry and are committed to providing a comfortable and stress-free experience for their patients. With over 10 years of combined experience in sedation techniques, they ensure that your comfort and safety are always their top priority.
Dr. Huston and Dr. Farrell are known for their compassionate approach to care, helping patients overcome dental anxiety with professionalism and ease. Their expertise in sedation and pain management guarantees that each patient receives the best care possible, no matter the procedure.

How to Protect Your Teeth This Halloween
Halloween is right around the corner, and while it’s a time for spooky fun, costumes, and sweets, it’s also a time to keep oral health in mind. At Dental Care Ireland, we know how tempting it can be to indulge in sweet treats during this festive season, but we’re here to ensure your smile stays as bright and healthy as ever. Here are some essential tips to protect your teeth from the scary side effects of Halloween sugar.
Choose Your Treats Wisely
Not all Halloween sweets are created equal! Sticky and chewy candies like toffees and gummies cling to your teeth, which can increase the risk of tooth decay. Instead, opt for chocolates, which are easier to wash away and less likely to cause cavities. Dark chocolate, in particular, can be a better option as it contains less sugar and even boasts some health benefits.
Limit the Amount of Sugary Treats
It’s easy to get caught up in the fun and munch on sweets all day long. Try to limit the frequency of snacking on sugary foods, as constant exposure to sugar increases the chances of tooth decay. Enjoy your treats in moderation, ideally after meals, when saliva production is higher to help rinse away sugars and neutralise acids.
Stay Hydrated
After indulging in sugary snacks, drinking plenty of water is a great way to help rinse away food particles and sugar that can cling to teeth. Water also encourages saliva production, which is the mouth’s natural defence against plaque build-up and acid.
Maintain Your Brushing and Flossing Routine
The excitement of Halloween can sometimes make it easy to forget the basics. Make sure that even during the festivities, you stick to your regular brushing and flossing routine. Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing once a day helps remove any sugary remnants and keeps your teeth healthy.
Schedule a Post-Halloween Check-Up
If you’ve overindulged in sweets, there’s no better time to visit us for a check-up. Regular dental visits help catch any issues early and keep your oral health in tip-top shape. We can also give your teeth a professional clean, which is the perfect way to ensure your post-Halloween smile is cavity-free.
Be Mindful of Your Children’s Dental Health
Halloween is a magical time for children, but it’s important to help them avoid the long-term effects of too much sugar. Encourage them to eat their sweets in moderation, ensure they follow a good oral hygiene routine, and perhaps even exchange some of their sugary treats for healthier snacks.
Consider Sugar-Free Alternatives
Many shops now offer sugar-free versions of classic Halloween treats. These can be a great alternative for enjoying the spooky season without worrying as much about cavities. If you’re giving out sweets to trick-or-treaters, why not offer some sugar-free options too?
A Healthy Halloween Starts with Dental Care Ireland
Halloween is meant to be fun, and with a few simple steps, you can enjoy the holiday without worrying about your oral health. If you’d like to discuss more ways to protect your teeth, or if you need to book an appointment post-Halloween, our friendly team at Dental Care Ireland is here to help.

Teeth Straightening for Adults: Your Guide to Modern Orthodontic Options
With advancements in orthodontic technology, adults now have more options than ever to achieve a straighter smile. Clear aligners and discreet braces are transforming how teeth straightening is approached, making it easier and less invasive for patients of all ages. We spoke with our specialist orthodontists to address some frequently asked questions about adult braces. Whether you’re curious about treatment options, the benefits of Invisalign, or wondering if braces are right for you, our experts provide valuable insights below.
Am I too old for braces?
As long as your teeth and gums are healthy, there is no upper age limit for orthodontic treatment. More adults are choosing braces later in life, whether for cosmetic reasons or to correct long-standing dental issues.
Can I straighten my teeth discreetly?
Yes, modern orthodontic technologies offer a variety of comfortable, minimally invasive, and nearly invisible options, including:
- Aligners, such as Invisalign, which use a series of clear and removable plastic trays.
- Ceramic braces, which are tooth-coloured and blend in naturally with teeth.
- Lingual braces, applied with metal brackets on the back of teeth rather than the front.
Which treatment option is best for me?
The most suitable treatment depends on your specific orthodontic needs. Your orthodontist can recommend the best option, which may sometimes involve a combination of Invisalign and traditional braces.
Is Invisalign suitable for everybody?
While Invisalign is an excellent choice for many, it may not address all orthodontic concerns. Your orthodontist will assess your teeth’s shape and position, and any previous treatments like dental bridges, veneers, or crowns, to determine if Invisalign is right for you.
What are the benefits of Invisalign?
Invisalign offers several benefits, including its nearly invisible appearance. You can also remove the aligners to eat, brush, or floss as usual. Since the aligners are custom-made from a 3D scan of your teeth, progress visits are kept to a minimum.
When are braces a better choice than Invisalign?
Braces can address a wider range of dental and facial issues. If you have multiple or complex problems, braces often provide the necessary strength and precision to correct them. While braces may be more visible, they are often the most effective option for certain orthodontic treatments.
How long will orthodontic treatment take?
The duration of treatment depends on the type and extent of the correction required, typically ranging from six months to two years. Adults may take slightly longer than children, as their facial bones are no longer growing. Your orthodontist will give you a more accurate estimate during your consultation.
Where do I start?
If you’re considering adult braces, start by consulting your general dentist. They will assess the health of your teeth and gums and, if suitable, refer you to an orthodontic specialist. Find your local dentist here.
