Mouthguards: Protect Your Smile

When it comes to protecting our bodies during physical activity, we often focus on wearing helmets, knee pads, and other protective gear. However, one area that is frequently overlooked is the mouth. Whether you’re an athlete or someone who wants to safeguard against dental injuries, investing in a mouthguard/gum shield can be one of the smartest decisions you can make for your oral health.

Why do Mouthguards matter?

Mouthguards are crucial for safeguarding your teeth, gums, and jaw during various sports and activities. Mouthguards act as a cushion, absorbing the impact of blows or falls that could otherwise result in broken teeth, cut lips, or injuries to the tongue and cheeks. For athletes engaged in contact sports like football, rugby, or boxing, wearing a mouthguard can significantly reduce the risk of dental trauma, and in many cases, it is a mandatory requirement.

Who are they designed for?

Mouthguards aren’t just for kids on the soccer field or adults in the boxing ring – they’re essential for everyone, regardless of age. Whether you’re participating in sports or grappling with nighttime teeth grinding, mouthguards play a vital role in protecting your oral health and preserving your smile.

How many types of Gum Shields are there?

There are three types of gum shields available in Ireland, but not all of them meet sports regulation requirements:

  • Stock Gum Shield: Stock gum shields are pre-formed and ready to wear. They are inexpensive but can feel cumbersome and occasionally affect breathing or talking.
  • Boil and Bite Gum Shield: Boil and bite gum shields are moulded to your teeth and jaw structure in a basic way. Typically, you place the gum shield into warm water and bite as per the instructions to mould it. While they satisfy most sports clubs’ mandatory ruling, the CE mark must be on the packaging to indicate that it has met certain acceptable standards.
  • Custom Gum Shield: Custom gum shields are professionally fitted to your mouth by a dentist and offer the highest level of comfort and protection while meeting sports regulation requirements.

What makes dentist Mouthguards different from retail Mouthguards?

Dentist-fitted mouthguards offer several advantages over retail options, thanks to their custom design and professional craftsmanship:

  • Customisation: Dentist-fitted mouthguards are tailor-made to fit the unique contours of your mouth. Dentists take impressions of your teeth and gums, ensuring a precise and comfortable fit that offers maximum protection and stability.
  • Enhanced Protection: Custom-fitted mouthguards provide superior protection against impact and injury compared to off-the-shelf options. By conforming closely to the teeth and gums, they effectively absorb and distribute the force of impact, reducing the risk of dental trauma, jaw injuries, and concussions.
  • Durability and Longevity: Dentist-fitted mouthguards are crafted using high-quality materials and professional techniques, ensuring durability and longevity. Custom-fitted guards are designed to withstand regular use and maintain their shape and effectiveness for an extended period. This durability makes them a cost-effective investment in the long run.

How often should I change my Gum Shield?

Replacing your gum shield is recommended each year for a growing child, as their jaw and teeth arrangement will change. For adults, replacement is needed when the guard shows signs of wear. Bring your gum shield to your dental check-up so your dentist can assess whether or not it needs to be replaced.

Fall in Love with Your Smile: Teeth Whitening

This Valentine’s Day, let’s not just celebrate romantic love, but also embrace the beauty of self-love. Join us as we explore how to unlock the radiance of your smile, not just for February 14th, but for every day that follows. Let us help you to radiate confidence and charm with a smile that captures hearts and leaves a lasting impression.

Am I a suitable for teeth whitening?

Finding out if teeth whitening is right for you starts with a thorough check-up with your dentist. Generally, professional teeth whitening is recommended for patients with healthy teeth and gums, free from issues like gum disease, tooth decay, or hypersensitivity.

What does the teeth whitening treatment involve?

Your dentist will work with you to establish your desired shade of white. Customised whitening trays will be created based on impressions of your teeth. These trays, along with a special whitening gel, will be provided for at-home use.

How long does the treatment take?

Teeth whitening typically involves using the trays and gel at home for approximately one hour per day over seven to 14 days, depending on your desired shade outcome.

How white will my teeth go?

The achievable shade of white varies based on your teeth’s initial color. Your dentist can provide insight into the likely outcome before beginning the treatment.

Will I feel pain or sensitivity?

It’s common to experience some sensitivity during the whitening process, but this usually subsides after treatment. Using a sensitive toothpaste before and during whitening may help alleviate discomfort, especially if you have sensitive teeth.

Does the teeth whitening treatment whiten crowns, veneers, or fillings?

No, teeth whitening only affects natural teeth. Restorations like crowns, veneers, or tooth-coloured fillings won’t whiten. If you have such restorations on your front teeth, you may consider replacing them after whitening to match your new tooth shade.

Are teeth whitening results permanent?

Results vary from person to person and may be influenced by lifestyle factors like smoking and consumption of staining foods and drinks. Annual touch-ups or as-needed applications of whitening gel can help maintain your brighter smile.

How can I maintain my brighter smile?

Consistent oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing, is key to preserving your whitened teeth. Additionally, avoiding smoking, maintaining a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and scheduling regular dental visits for cleanings and check-ups are essential for long-term oral health.

Book yourself in for a teeth whitening treatment at one of our many practices all over Ireland.

Align Your 2024 Goals with Spark Aligners!

While across the Dental Care Ireland group, we provide traditional braces, as well as Invisalign, our latest addition is the introduction of Spark Aligners to our Swords, Co. Dublin and Greystones, Co. Wicklow practices.

Spark Aligners are designed to provide effective orthodontic treatment while seamlessly blending into your life – not interrupting it! They are a popular alternative to traditional braces because they are virtually invisible and can be easily removed for eating or drinking, meaning you won’t face dietary restrictions as you would with metal braces.

What are Spark Clear Aligners?

Spark Aligners are clear, virtually invisible aligners that gradually straighten your teeth overtime. Spark Aligners are ideal if you’re seeking orthodontic treatment, but don’t want to go down the traditional braces route. Whether this is for comfort, lifestyle or aesthetics, Spark Aligners are an amazing alternative to traditional braces.

What are Spark Aligners designed to treat?

Spark Aligners are designed to treat a variety of teeth-straightening cases, including crowding, spacing, open bite, underbite, overbite, crossbite, and more. They are custom-made to fit your teeth and gradually shift them into the desired position.

Where can I get Spark Clear Aligners?

They are available in the following Dental Care Ireland practices:

How much does Spark Clear Aligners Cost?

As Dr Bianca tailors treatments for each patient, the cost of Spark Aligners can vary from person to person. Find a general guide to orthodontic fees you can find them here:

How often do Spark patients receive a new set of aligners?

Patients usually receive a new set of aligners every one to two weeks as part of their personalised treatment plan. New aligner sets ensure a proper fit for optimal tooth movement as teeth move into their new desired locations.

How long do I wear the Spark Aligners?

Dr Bianca will be able to advise you on this as it will depend on the severity of your case. In general, patients should wear their Spark aligners 22 hours a day. Ideally, patients would only take out the aligners to eat, drink, or brush their teeth.

How long does it take to get Spark Clear Aligners fitted?

Once you book your consultation with Dr Bianca, she will speak to you about the next steps. Should you require no other additional dental treatment ahead of starting your Spark journey, typically you will need to book back in for a ‘records appointment’. At this appointment, impressions of your teeth will be taken along with photographs. If you attend our Greystones practice, a 3D scan is taken of your teeth using our incredible iTero Scanner which is used to create your aligners. These will then be sent to the lab to create your bespoke aligners.

Do Spark Clear Aligners hurt?

No, you shouldn’t experience pain during Spark Aligner treatment. However, you may experience slight pressure or discomfort each time you get a new aligner, as the pressure is designed to shift your teeth into the desired position over time. However, there is no need to worry, as this is completely normal!

What’s the difference between Spark Clear Aligners and normal braces?

The aligners are almost invisible, meaning people feel more comfortable wearing them. However, in many cases, traditional ceramic or metal braces are still used.

Spark consultations are currently available at Dental Care Ireland in Swords and Greystones.

You can book an appointment through our online portal and choose a time and date that suits you for both Swords and Greystones.

Dental Care Ireland Killarney Wins Award

Dental Care Ireland Killarney Wins ‘Caring Dental Team of the Year 2023’. We are thrilled to announce that Dental Care Ireland Killarney, formerly Fuller Dental, has been awarded Colgate’s Caring Dental Team of the Year for 2023. This family-oriented practice, led by brothers Dr. David and Dr. Declan Fuller, is setting new standards for patient care in Kerry.

A Commitment to Patient Care

Dental Care Ireland Killarney were nominated for Colgate’s Caring Dental Team of the Year by a patient with chronic pain syndrome and arthritis. In nominating, their patient said “Their exceptional patience and flexibility in accommodating the patient’s unique challenges, set them apart. In addition, their commitment to providing emergency care during the pandemic showcases a dedication to the well-being of their patients.”

The patient, who has been attending Dental Care Ireland Killarney for many years, expressed gratitude for the exceptional care they received from the Fuller brothers and their team. “Despite facing the challenges of managing chronic pain and utilising crutches for mobility, the team’s unwavering patience and understanding is greatly appreciated. There were instances when I had to cancel appointments on short notice due to the immense pain, the team always displayed remarkable compassion. During the pandemic, the team ensured I received the necessary emergency care that I needed.”

At Dental Care Ireland, care is at the centre of everything we do. This is why the Colgate Caring Dental Team Award is such a great acknowledgement for our Killarney team. This is Dental Care Ireland’s second major award of 2023, it comes on the back of ‘Employer of The Year’ at The Irish Dentistry Awards in September.

The Colgate Recognition

Colgate’s Caring Dental Team of the Year award is a prestigious accolade that recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of dentistry. Dental Care Ireland Killarney’s achievement reflects the team’s commitment to excellent and patient care.

Talking about the award, Dr. David Fuller says “An award of any sort is great at any time, but such recognition from one’s patients and one’s peers magnifies that accolade wonderfully. It’s a huge boost to our team, and we’d like to thank everyone involved. This includes the Dental Care Ireland group, who I’d like to thank for the technology investment, but always allowing us to prioritise patient care at all times”.

The Fuller Brothers: Caring Kerrymen

At the heart of Dental Care Ireland Killarney are the Fuller brothers, Dr. David and Dr. Declan. Born and bred in Killarney, Dr. David graduated from UCC in 1978 and set up Fuller Dental in 1980. His brother, Dr. Declan joined him at Fuller Dental in 1998 and the brothers have been providing dental care to the people of Killarney ever since.

Outside of their practice, the Fuller brothers are heavily involved in their local community. They both take part in their local rugby and cycling clubs, and Dr. Declan can often be found refereeing local rugby matches!

As Dental Care Ireland Killarney continues to lead the way in dental care in Kerry, the Fuller brothers and their team remind us that, at the heart of dentistry, it’s the care for patients that truly matters. Congratulations to the entire team at Dental Care Ireland Killarney on this remarkable achievement!

Dental Sedation is Now Available at Callan Dental

Dental sedation is offered at Callan Dental for patients who suffer high amounts of fear, anxiousness or nervousness about dental treatment. Dr Jennifer Huston offers both IV and inhalation sedation at Callan Dental. Sedation is offered for all treatments apart from the initial examination.

Types of Sedation at Callan Dental

Nitrous Oxide Sedation (Happy Air): Nitrous Oxide Sedation is a gas sedative that helps patients relax during their dental procedures. It is administered through a mask and wears off quickly after the procedure.

IV Sedation: Intravenous Sedation (IV Sedation) is an option for patients who need a higher level of sedation. It is administered directly into the bloodstream, ensuring a comfortable and anxiety-free experience.

Below, Dr Jennifer Huston has answered some of your frequently asked questions about sedation at Callan Dental.

Am I suitable for dental sedation?

Dental sedation is an option for those who suffer with high amounts of fear, nervousness or anxiety about dental treatments. This can be used for treatments such as simple extractions, surgical extractions, restorations and cleanings. While there is no specific treatment that requires dental sedation, you may want to avail of the option if you do experience anxiety when undergoing dental treatment. It all depends on your wants and needs as a patient. While there is no upper age limit for dental sedation, a patient must be at least 18 years of age for IV Sedation, and Nitrous Oxide Sedation is available from approximately the age of 6 years old, based on suitability assessment at the consultation. Each patients suitability will be carefully assessed, taking into consideration their medical history.

How safe is dental sedation?

Dental sedation is very safe. Before booking a treatment with sedation, patients must attend a consultation appointment. Your dentist will discuss your medical history with you before administering it to make sure that you do not have any conditions which could make it an issue.

What do I need to do before sedation?

Before your dental sedation, you should not:

●      Consume alcohol 24 hours before the appointment

Before your dental sedation, you can:

●      Take any prescription medicines as normal; the dentist will have already checked that these are compatible with the sedative used.

●      Have a light, non fatty meal (for example, toast).

Is there anything I need to prepare coming into the appointment?

●      You should wear flat heeled shoes coming to the appointment as you will be unsteady on your feet for a couple of hours following the sedation visit. You should also not wear any nail varnish or false nails as we need to place a pulse monitor on your finger that shines a light through your fingernail during the treatment.

Do I need to have somebody with me?

Yes. You must bring a responsible adult with you to the sedation visit. They must remain in the practice during your treatment and must escort you home. We will not be able to carry out the sedation treatment unless this person is present. This is a legal requirement of the laws governing Dental Treatment under IV Sedation.

What do I need to do after sedation?

After your treatment, it is important that you:

●      Have a responsible adult with you for 24 hours

●      Do not drive a vehicle for 24 hours.

●      Do not operate machinery

●      Do not look after small children

●      Do not carry out any dangerous tasks requiring concentration for 24 hours

●      Do not consume alcohol or sleeping tablets for 24 hours

●      We will keep you in our waiting room or in the dental chair as the sedative starts to wear off. Generally this only takes between 15-30 minutes.

Will I feel sick afterwards?

No. Unlike a general anaesthetic, there is usually no feeling of nausea afterwards. This is due to the fact that very different drugs are used. However, you will have a very good night’s sleep following your sedation.

About Invisalign:

Invisalign is a clear aligner system that can effectively and discreetly straighten your teeth. It is comfortable and almost unnoticeable, making it an extremely popular method of teeth straightening.

Invisalign is designed to fit your lifestyle rather than disrupt it, whether you’re busy with work, school or travel. These virtually invisible aligners can correct a range of concerns, including overbite, underbite, crossbite, gap teeth, open bite and crowded teeth.

What is the difference between Invisalign and traditional braces?

Invisalign uses clear aligners to straighten your teeth, whereas traditional braces use metal wires and brackets. Not only is Invisalign Go more comfortable, it is also more aesthetically pleasing for those who are image-conscious. They also require fewer dental visits compared to traditional braces.

Our Invisalign Open Day has limited availability, so book your appointment online today! Alternatively, you can call us directly on (021) 489 4400 to book your appointment or ask any questions you may have. We look forward to seeing you!
