Exciting News for Dental Care Ireland Kells!

REVA Dental joined the Dental Care Ireland group in April 2022. The REVA group consisted of dental practices in Kilkenny, Limerick and Kells. As of February 2023, REVA Kells and Dental Care Ireland Kells have merged into one dental practice.

Below, we have answered your questions about the merge.

Where is the new (merged) Dental Care Ireland Kells practice located?

Dental Care Ireland Kells is now located in the REVA Kells building, which is right across the road from our old Dental Care Ireland Kells practice! You can find the new Dental Care Ireland practice at Bective Square, Townparks, Kells, Co. Meath; only a minute walk from our old location!

I am an existing patient of REVA Kells. What does this mean for me?

Existing patients of REVA Kells will continue to be patients in this location, now named Dental Care Ireland Kells. This means that you will continue to receive excellent dental care at the same location, without any fuss. You do not need to re-register as a new patient or fill out any new documents. In short, the only thing that will be changing for you is the name above the door.

I am an existing patient of the old Dental Care Ireland Kells practice. What does this mean for me?

Existing patients of Dental Care Ireland Kells will automatically have their information transferred to the new location. This means that you will continue to receive excellent dental care right across the road, without any fuss. You do not need to re-register as a new patient or fill out any new documents. In short, the only thing that will be changing for you is the location.

Why did Dental Care Ireland Kells and REVA Kells merge?

At Dental Care Ireland, we are constantly thinking of ways to improve our patients’ experience and how to bring them the best dental treatments. Snore No More!

Sleep apnoea is a condition where the walls of the throat collapse during sleep which affects your normal breathing pattern. As a result, your regular sleeping pattern can be affected and you may snore.

Dr Michael Crowe from Dental Care Ireland Kimmage provides oral sleep apnoea appliances to patients who snore or have mild to moderate sleep apnoea. Below, he has answered some commonly asked sleep apnoea questions.

What are symptoms of sleep apnoea?

Sleep apnoea is quite a common condition. However, you often won’t be the one to notice symptoms as they occur while you sleep. For this reason, it is usually a partner, friend or family member who spots the signs of sleep apnoea initially. These symptoms can include loud snoring, loud or struggling breathing, gasping or snorting. This may cause you to wake up frequently through the night. Even if you don’t awaken, you may be brought to a light sleep. As a result, you may find that you’re very tired during the day due to interruptions to your sleeping pattern.

What causes sleep apnoea?

The most common causes of sleep apnoea include weight, age, medication, lifestyle and family history.

Weight

If you are overweight, your risk of developing sleep apnoea greatly increases. This is because excess weight around your neck and airways can make breathing more difficult.

Age

While sleep apnoea can affect people of any age, you are more likely to develop the condition if you are aged 40 or above.

Medication

Certain medications may have an effect on your airways which can cause sleep apnoea. This includes medications with a sedative effect such as sleeping tablets.

Lifestyle

Certain lifestyle factors such as alcohol consumption and smoking can increase your risk of developing sleep apnoea. Drinking alcohol, especially before you go to sleep, can relax and narrow your airways which may lead to snoring and sleep apnoea. If you smoke, you are three times more likely to develop sleep apnoea than someone who has never smoked. This is because smoking can increase inflammation of the airways.

Family History

If a family member has sleep apnoea, you may be at higher risk of developing the condition.

How can sleep apnoea be treated?

Sleep apnoea can often be treated by making certain lifestyle changes and using breathing apparatus while you sleep. Making healthy lifestyle changes is important if you’re dealing with sleep apnoea. This can include losing weight if you are overweight, not smoking and limiting alcohol consumption (especially before you sleep).

What happens if sleep apnoea is left untreated?

People with sleep apnoea may go undiagnosed for a long time as the condition only occurs during sleep, making it difficult to spot. However, if you suspect you may have sleep apnoea, it is important to book an appointment with your doctor. In the short-term, sleep apnoea can affect a person’s life by causing tiredness during the day, impaired memory due to lack of sleep, and so on. In the long term, sleep apnoea can lead to more serious medical conditions, so it is important to see a doctor if you suspect you may be living with the condition.

If you are affected by sleep apnoea and are looking for a solution, Dental Care Ireland Kimmage can help. Contact details and location.

Looking for an Orthodontist in Ashbourne?

We are delighted to announce that Dental Care Ireland Ashbourne now offers full orthodontic service! Orthodontic treatment has become extremely popular throughout Ireland – no longer is it the preserve of young children and adolescents; now, people of all ages are interested in getting the treatment done to fix irregularly shaped teeth and, ultimately, to get a better smile.

Dr Heraclio Alves Barbosa Junior, also known as Leo, is our Orthodontist in Ashbourne with over 20 years of orthodontic experience. Below, he has outlined the types of braces available in Ashbourne and reasons why patients choose orthodontic treatment.

Types of braces in Ashbourne:

Traditional/Metal Braces:

Traditional/metal braces are made of individual brackets which are cemented to each tooth with an archwire attached to apply a continuous gentle pressure to the teeth.

Clear/Ceramic Braces:

Ceramic or “clear braces” work very similarly to traditional braces but are tooth coloured so that they blend in with your teeth and are much less noticeable.

Invisalign & Invisalign Go:

Invisalign is a clear aligner system that can effectively and discreetly straighten your teeth. Invisalign is comfortable and almost unnoticeable, making it an extremely popular method of teeth straightening.

Main reasons for having orthodontic treatment:

Appearance:

Many people seek orthodontic treatment to improve the appearance of their smile by straightening teeth and correcting any spacing. This also often improves the appearance of a patient’s face. By correcting any dental issues, a person’s facial features are also aligned with a view to making the face as symmetrical as possible.

Health:

Once a straighter smile is achieved, it becomes easier for you to take care of your oral health. Straighter teeth are easier to clean, brush and floss, which means it is less likely that you will suffer from tooth decay or gum disease down the line.

Function:

Correcting issues such as crooked teeth or spacing can improve the function of our teeth. This allows for better chewing which improves your digestion as food is properly chewed, where it may have not been before. If you have large spaces between your teeth, correcting this can also improve speech.

Braces are a safe, reliable and effective method for correcting teeth. If you are looking for an Orthodontist in Ashbourne, please contact our friendly team on (01) 835 0344 who can talk you through your options. Alternatively, you can visit our website.

Are You Dreaming of a White Christmas?

Teeth whitening is in high demand as we head towards the festive season, and we have a special offer just for you. We are offering 20% off teeth whitening at Dental Care Ireland this November and December!

Teeth whitening is an extremely popular treatment because our teeth are not naturally perfectly white, no matter how well we look after them! Certain foods and lifestyle choices, such as coffee and smoking, can also affect the colour of our teeth.

So what does teeth whitening treatment actually entail? Here are the simple steps to a brighter, whiter smile with Dental Care Ireland.

Consultation

The first step is to book a consultation with your dentist to make sure your teeth are suitable for a professional whitening treatment. Your dentist will then perform a thorough examination of your teeth. Issues such as gum disease, tooth decay or hypersensitivity may determine whether or not you are a suitable candidate for whitening.

Also, whitening only works on natural teeth, so you may have to get crowns, veneers or fillings replaced after whitening to ensure they remain the same shade as your newly whitened teeth.

Impressions

Once the examination is complete, your dentist will take ‘impressions’ of your teeth so whitening trays can be created specifically for your teeth. Your dentist will also discuss what shade of white you would like to achieve through the treatment.

Home Kit

When your trays have been made, you will be asked to return to the practice to collect them. Our team will then provide you with these trays and the whitening kit, which includes tubes of whitening gel for you to use at home.

Your dentist will talk you through how, when and for how long to use the gel. It is very simple and the whole process has been designed to have a minimal impact on your daily life. You will also be provided with detailed written instructions and if you have any questions, the team will be happy to answer them.

Treatment

We generally recommend that the teeth whitening trays are used at home for at least an hour a day for between 7 and 14 days to achieve the result you want, though your dentist will make recommendations specifically for you depending on your lifestyle and whitening goals.

The whitening gel can also cause some discomfort to patients with sensitive teeth, but you needn’t worry about this as it is perfectly normal. It will go away after your treatment is finished. Your dentist can also provide you with specialist sensitive toothpaste to use during your home treatment.

After the initial treatment, you will likely have enough whitening gel so you can do your own ‘top-ups’ if and when desired. Additional whitening gel tubes can be purchased at our practice if you need them in future.

Why not treat yourself or your loved one to a white smile this Christmas? To avail of 20% off teeth whitening, you can contact your local Dental Care Ireland practice here.

T&C’s apply. Offer ends 31st December 2022.

Trick or Treat! Mind Your Teeth!

We all know that sugar can be bad for your teeth, which makes Halloween a particularly scary time for your oral health!

Sugar in sweets and fizzy drinks allows for the bacteria in dental plaque to produce acids. This acid can lead to loss of tooth mineral, which eventually leads to cavities and tooth decay.

Dr Jennifer Collins, Clinical Director of Dental Care Ireland, has outlined some tricks to protect your healthy teeth this Halloween.

#1 Choose Treats Wisely

While sugar in general is bad for your teeth, some treats can be more harmful than others. For example, sticky sweets such as toffee or jellies will linger on your teeth for longer than softer treats like chocolate, which puts you at higher risk of experiencing tooth decay. Also, beware of hard sweets that can chip or crack teeth. Bags of popcorn are a great, healthy option for trick-or-treaters!

#2 Timing is Everything

We advise enjoying your Halloween treats during mealtimes, such as after dinner. Saliva production is increased during mealtimes, so your mouth will be better able to rinse sugar off your teeth. If you graze on sweet treats throughout the day, your mouth does not get a chance to rinse the sugar away, putting you at higher risk of tooth decay.

#3 Drink Plenty of Water

Drinking plenty of water will help dilute any acid attacks caused by sugary foods or drinks, and will also wash away any sticky sweets that are stuck to your teeth. However, keep in mind to avoid ‘healthy’ drinks such as smoothies or fruit juices, as these also contain high amounts of sugar and so can be counter productive.

#4 Be Fearful of Fake Fangs

It is important to be cautious of Halloween costumes that may impact dental health, such as fake teeth or prosthetics. Read the labels carefully to avoid any potential choking hazards for children. For younger children, who are losing baby teeth, it is best to avoid wearing any false teeth or fangs, in case tooth loss may be accelerated.

#5 Keep Up Good Habits

Maintaining a good, regular dental hygiene routine is very important for healthy teeth, especially when teeth are exposed to more sugar than usual. Ideally, we should be brushing our teeth twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste, especially last thing at night. Also, don’t forget to floss!

#6 Wait Before Brushing

While brushing is important for healthy teeth, it’s important not to brush your teeth too soon after consuming sugary food or drinks. Some acidic foods soften your enamel, so if you brush right after eating them, you risk damaging your enamel further while it is weakened. For this reason, it’s a good idea to wait approximately 30 minutes before brushing your teeth.

#7 Schedule an Annual Exam

The Halloween mid-term break is a good time to schedule a family dental appointment if you haven’t already done so. The best way to prevent dental issues is to visit your dentist regularly. Remember, prevention is better than cure! You can make an appointment with your local Dental Care Ireland practice today.

Top Tips for Back to School Dental Care

It’s almost back to school time! With books to buy and uniforms to fit, this is always a very busy period for parents and guardians. There are plenty of boxes to tick to make sure your child is ready for the new term, and their back to school dental health is one of them!

From tooth-friendly lunchboxes to mouthguard fitting, Dr Jennifer Collins, Clinical Director of Dental Care Ireland, has set out some tips to help you plan for your child’s return to school.

#1 Schedule a check-up

Prevention is better than cure, and regular check-ups with your paediatric dentist are the best way to avoid unnecessary pain and minimise impact on important study time during the school year. Routine attendance will also help to reduce unexpected dental costs in the longer-term. Booking your child’s dental or orthodontic appointments well in advance can also help you plan effectively around their school schedule.

#2 Replace toothbrushes

In the rush to update school shoes, uniforms and stationery for the new school year, be sure to consider replacing the family’s toothbrushes too. It is important to replace your child’s toothbrush at least every three months, or after an illness. To keep their mouths healthy, regular brushing with a fluoride toothpaste is key.

#3 Supervise brushing

For younger children, parents will still need to provide assistance with brushing, whilst at the same time encouraging them to manage their own brushing routine. Experts recommend that brushing assistance is needed until such time as the child has demonstrated good manual dexterity for independent tasks such as tying shoelaces.

#4 Tooth-friendly lunch boxes

Most schools have a healthy lunch box policy, which goes hand-in-hand with maintaining good dental health. This should include a balance of grains, milk, cheese, raw vegetables, yoghurt or fruit. Ideally, opt for a small child’s size bottle of water or a small carton of milk. Drinking water will help to dilute any acid attacks on the teeth.

#5 Restrict treats to mealtime

With the prospect of birthday party season and Halloween on the horizon, try to limit treats to mealtimes and avoid grazing on them throughout the day. Our saliva production increases during meals, which helps rinse away sugary food particles and can reduce the risk of cavities. Avoid treats that tend to linger in the mouth, such as hard or sticky sweets.

#6 Mouth guard fitting

A properly fitted mouthguard is an essential safety feature for children ahead of the winter sports season. A dentist can custom fit your child’s mouthguard to ensure that it is accurately adapted to the mouth and stays in place securely. As the child’s teeth develop and change, it is important to check each year that their mouthguard still fits.

#7 Emergency contacts

The beginning of the school year is a great opportunity to update your emergency contact list. Ideally, this should include your paediatric dentist’s details so that if your child has a dental emergency at school, your family dentist can be contacted. It is also worth checking if your school has access to a paediatric dentist on call, in case of playground or sports mishaps.

Invisalign Open Day at Dental Care Ireland Tuam

Have you considered Invisalign, but the time never felt right?  Well, with our exclusive Invisalign Open Day offers at Dental Care Ireland Tuam, there has never been a better time to book a consultation!

Dr Amita Bhagwat & Dr Alison Browne are hosting our first ever Invisalign Open Day at Dental Care Ireland Tuam on Wednesday, the 10th of August. On the day, we will be offering you free Invisalign consultations, free teeth whitening and a hygiene visit with a total worth of €350!

Invisalign is a clear aligner system that can effectively and discreetly straighten your teeth. Invisalign is comfortable and almost unnoticeable, making it an extremely popular method of teeth straightening. They are designed to fit your lifestyle rather than disrupt it, whether you’re busy with work, school or travel.

Invisalign utilises virtually invisible and removable aligners to gently shift your teeth into position and gradually straighten your teeth over time. These clear aligners can correct a range of concerns, including overbite, underbite, crossbite, gap teeth, open bite and crowded teeth.

During your free consultation on our Invisalign Open Day, we will use our iTero scanner which allows us to show you 3D digital before & after images of what you can expect from your Invisalign results. Places are limited, and the above offer only applies to patients seen on the day. To avoid disappointment, you can book online here to secure your free consultation.
