Root canal treatment is effective solution for decayed teeth
Root canal treatment repairs teeth that are decaying or have become infected, easing any discomfort or pain that this causes in a patient’s jaw
Root canal treatment is a procedure carried out by dentists and specialist endodontists who work on the canals below your crown by removing infected material. If the nerve in a tooth has died, it will need to be taken out. As it decays, bacteria spreads which can lead to infection. The procedure will remove any discomfort from the infected area and restore your teeth to normal function.
Is there a dentist near me that does it?
Yes, Dental Care Ireland practices around Ireland carry out this treatment. You’ll find the locations of the practice nearest you here.
Is there a dentist near me in Ballsbridge or Sandymount that does it?
Our partner practice, Northumberland Dental Care, which looks after patients in the Dublin 2 and Dublin 4 areas of south County Dublin, also carries out the procedure.
Do I need root canal surgery?
The following are some of the symptoms associated with infection in your root canal, though sometimes no obvious symptoms present themselves:
- Pain when chewing
- Long-term sensitivity to hot/cold
- Darkening or discolouration
- Swelling and tenderness in your gums
- A painful or sensitive ‘spot’ on gums
What happens during the treatment?
It is a relatively straightforward procedure during which your dentist or endodontist will extract any infected pulp or nerve from the root canal area below your tooth. He or she will then clean and disinfect the area. Finally, it will be filled and sealed.
The rubber-like material used to fill the tooth is called ‘gutta percha’ and it will seal the area to prevent reinfection. Tooth-coloured material is then used for the crown.
How much does the treatment cost?
This depends on the location of the teeth involved. Find out more about our prices.
It is also worth bearing in mind that certain treatments, such as root canal surgery, are eligible for 20 per cent tax relief under the Med 2 Scheme.
Is this type of treatment painful?
No, it is a relatively painless procedure. You will receive a local anaesthetic which will numb the area being worked on. You may be aware of work being done but it should not cause any discomfort.
How long does it take?
Generally, the procedure will take about 90 minutes though this will depend on the extent of the problem. You may also need to visit the dentist or endontist on two occasions.
What do I need to do after treatment?
When the canal has been filled, your dentist or endodontist will fill the crown. In some cases, a restorative crown is needed. Your dentist will advise you on this as well as giving you advice on post-treatment care.

Taking care of teething in your little ones
In this week’s Q&A, Dr Niamh O’Grady from our Castlebar practice in Mayo answers some frequently asked questions about teething and offers advice on how best to ease the transition for little ones and parents alike
Q: When does teething start?
A: Although timing varies widely, first teeth usually start to erupt into a baby’s mouth at about six months old.
Q: Which is the first tooth to arrive?
A: The two lower front teeth are generally the first to appear, followed by the two upper front teeth. For some children, each new tooth erupts one at a time. For others, teeth can arrive in pairs or sets.
Q: When will my child stop teething?
A: Typically, most children will have a full set of 20 baby teeth by the time they reach three years of age.
Q: Is teething painful for children?
A: Signs and symptoms of teething vary from child to child. Some babies may feel little or no pain, while others show symptoms of teething that can last for weeks or months before a tooth erupts.
Q: What are the signs of teething in a baby?
A: While there is no single set of indicators, a baby may experience some or all of the following teething signs:
- Red and slightly swollen gums
- Red or flushed cheek(s)
- Excessive drooling/dribbling
- Chewing on objects
- Ear pulling or cheek rubbing
- Restlessness
- Reduced appetite
- Irritability
Q: Should I give my child a teething ring to ease discomfort?
A: A teething ring can provide a safe and soothing item for your baby to chew on, as well as a mild distraction from the pain. Never use a frozen teething ring as it could damage your baby’s gum.
Q: Are there any other ways to ease the pain?
A: Try using a clean finger or moistened gauze pad to lightly rub your baby’s gums in the affected area. The counter-pressure should help ease any discomfort. For babies over six months, some cold natural yoghurt or chilled fruit purée can also provide great comfort and relief for hot and swollen gums.
Q: How can I prevent skin irritation from drooling?
A: Excessive drooling is part of the teething process. To prevent skin irritation, keep a clean cloth handy to gently dry your baby’s chin, consider applying an approved moisturiser, and use a bib for additional comfort.
Q: Can I give my child medicine to relieve teething pain?
A: If your baby is experiencing a lot of pain and especially irritable, you may want to consider a suitable over-the-counter remedy such as children’s paracetamol, as recommended by your pharmacist.
Q: When should I first bring my child to the dentist?
A: Ideally before the age of two, and preferably when the first tooth arrives at around six months. Regular dental check-ups allow your dentist to monitor the development of your child’s teeth and give you an opportunity to ask questions on brushing, maintenance and diet.

Teeth straightening is now a simple treatment for adults
While orthodontics used to be primarily for teenagers, patients of all ages are now getting ‘braces’ fitted to correct any misalignment of teeth
It is perfectly natural to have concerns about whether your teeth are as straight as they could be – and most of us probably do worry about this at some stage in our lives. In the past, adults used to think that there was nothing further to be done about the issue as braces were only for young people. People would assume that their age meant their teeth had ‘settled’ and getting braces would have no effect.
However, as the technology around orthodontics and braces has developed over the years, there has never been a better time to get your teeth straightened. Not only is it very effective regardless of your age, it is also painless, comfortable and very straightforward. There are also various different methods used which will depend on your age and the amount of work you need done.
Why braces?
There are three main reasons why you, as an adult, might want or need orthodontic treatment:
- Function: Misaligned teeth affect your ‘bite’ and how you eat. Common issues include crowding, ‘deep bite’, protruding teeth and ‘crossbite’. Braces will correct these problems.
- Health: Having straight teeth throughout your mouth is better for your overall gum and dental health. It makes cleaning – brushing, flossing, etc – easier and more effective.
- Appearance: Many people opt to get braces for aesthetic reasons. If your teeth are crooked, they can affect how your smile looks. Indeed, many people don’t smile as much as they should if they are self-conscious about crooked teeth. Getting them straightened solves this and will give you a new self-confidence.
A visit to your dentist/orthodontist will help you to assess what treatment, if any, you would benefit from. Younger people who need braces generally get them fitted between the ages of eight and 14, while adults of all ages get theirs done.
Assessment
When your dentist refers you to a specialist orthodontist, they will examine your teeth and advise you on the best treatment for you. This will vary from patient to patient and will include a discussion on the most suitable braces.
How long does it take?
Orthodontic treatment in both children and adults usually lasts for between 12 and 24 months, though it is different for each patient. This depends on how much work you will need done. After treatment, your orthodontist may also advise you to use a retainer so your teeth stay in the position achieved.
How much does it cost?
Prices are different for each patient and will depend on your case and the type of braces you opt for. Your orthodontist will help you to choose the best option.
We use three different types of braces here in Dental Care Ireland:
Invisalign Clear Aligners
Clear aligners from Invisalign are made from plastic and are created just for your teeth. They are fixed to your teeth by your orthodontist and are practically invisible. They are one of the most popular options for this reason.
Ceramic braces
Clear – or ceramic – braces are another popular option as they are tooth-coloured and also barely noticeable.
Traditional metal braces
These remain the most popular option for children and adolescents as they provide the most effective and lasting solution to the problems misaligned teeth can create for young people. The brackets are ‘cemented’ to the teeth and a wire is used to ‘pressure’ the teeth into moving.
What do I have to do?
Your orthodontist will advise you on how best to care for your teeth while undergoing treatment as well as when your treatment is over. While wearing braces, it is important to keep your teeth and gums as healthy as possible through brushing and flossing, as well as watching what you eat and regularly visiting your dentist and/or hygienist.

How common is mouth cancer in Ireland?
There are over 700 cases of mouth, head and neck cancer reported in Ireland every year and that is why Mouth Cancer Awareness Day is so important.
What are the symptoms of mouth cancer?
Some signs and symptoms of mouth cancer include ulcers that do not heal within three weeks, red or white patches in the mouth, a lump or other unusual change in the mouth or neck, difficulty swallowing or chewing, persistent sore throat or hoarseness, and unexplained loose teeth.
Who is most at risk?
Mouth cancer is more common in men and older people. However, the number of women and younger people being diagnosed is rising. There are a number of risk factors for mouth cancer:
- Smoking or chewing tobacco

- A diet lacking in fruit and vegetables

What does a mouth cancer examination involve?
A mouth cancer exam is painless and quick. As part of your routine check-up, your dentist will examine both inside and outside your face, neck, lips and mouth to check for any possible signs of cancer.
How can I help to prevent mouth cancer?
Early detection of mouth cancer greatly improves the treatment outcome and chances of survival.
- Visit your dentist regularly, even if you wear dentures
- Look out for any changes in your mouth or neck

PRSI entitlements: All you need to know
PRSI entitlements often go unused as many people do not realise that they may be able to receive free or discounted dental treatment under the Government scheme
PRSI entitlements are part of a benefit scheme introduced by the Government for all people who pay PRSI. The Irish Times reported recently that hundreds of thousands of Irish taxpayers are not taking advantage of this initiative which offers free or discounted dental, optical and hearing care.
But what is the scheme and what exactly are you entitled to? We have the answers to all your questions.
What are ‘PRSI entitlements’?
The Treatment Benefit Scheme is an initiative of the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection and provides dental, optical and aural services to people who qualify.
Who is eligible for PRSI entitlements?
The scheme is open to insured employees who contribute pay-related social insurance (PRSI), as well as the self-employed and retired people who have the required number of contributions.
Am I entitled to receive these benefits?
Approximately two and half million people in Ireland pay PRSI which means they may qualify under this scheme. If you are an employee of a company or self-employed you are very likely to be eligible.
Is Dental Care Ireland part of this scheme?
Yes, Dental Care Ireland is part of this scheme. Find the Dental Care Ireland practice nearest to you. Our partner practice in Ballsbridge, Northumberland Dental Care, which caters for people living and/or working in Dublin 2 and Dublin 4, is also part of the scheme.
How do I find out if I qualify for Dental Care Ireland’s offer under the scheme?
Contact the practice closest to you directly by phone or email and they will check if you are eligible. If in Dublin 2 or Dublin 4, contact Northumberland Dental Care on +35316688441 and they will be able to see if you can avail of the service.
What do I get with Dental Care Ireland if I’m eligible?
There are various dental entitlements for both employed and self-employed PRSI payers: a full dental exam, a subsidised scale and polish (capped cost of €15) or a part-subsidised “protracted periodontal treatment”, which is a deeper type of cleaning.
What does an ‘Exam, Scale & Polish’ entail?
During an examination, your dentist will assess the state of your teeth, gums, tongue, cheeks and the floor and roof of your mouth. They will look at the work you have had done in the past and let you know what might need done in the future.
During the ‘scale’ part, your dentist will scrape away any plaque or tartar that may have built up in your mouth. They will then ‘polish’ your teeth which removes stains and blemishes on your teeth, leaving them smoother and whiter.
How do I book in for a check-up with Dental Care Ireland?
As mentioned above, the first thing to do is to contact your local practice to see if you are entitled to the benefits. Our receptionists will be happy to check for you, though you will have to give them consent to check using your PPS number and date of birth.
Why is a check-up important?
Getting regular dental exams is crucial for preventing serious problems occurring in the future. Your dentist will be able to see what is happening and advise you on how to avoid bigger issues.
Regular cleaning by a dentist or hygienist helps to remove plaque, tartar and bacteria, which contributes to cavities, gum disease and bad breath.
How often can I claim these entitlements?
These are available just one time in each calendar year, so you may claim it between January 1st and December 31st each year (but not once every 12 months).
What other benefits apart from dental are there?
Under the Treatment Benefit Scheme, you may qualify for optical benefits and hearing aids as well as a free dental check-up and the ‘Exam, Scale and Polish’ for €15.
Can I book online for dental treatments at your practices?
Yes. You will find a list of all our practices and their contact details here: www.dentalcareireland.ie/practices/

Dental crowns are an effective solution for damaged teeth
Dental crowns will completely restore your smile if you have teeth that have been badly chipped or broken
Dental crowns are fitted over existing damaged teeth, so that a patient’s bite and smile can be fixed. As they will be matched to the exact colour of your teeth, they work as an invisible solution which is one reason why they are so popular with patients.
What are dental crowns?
These are effectively ‘caps’ that are fitted over existing damaged or decayed teeth which cannot be mended using a filling or other method.
Is there a dentist near me that does crowns?
All Dental Care Ireland practices around the country now fit these for patients. Find the dental practice nearest to you.
Do I need crowns?
If one or more of your teeth are badly chipped or damaged and the issue cannot be fixed using traditional methods, your dentist may recommend getting a crown fitted. They act as if they were normal teeth so don’t affect chewing or eating.
How much do they cost?
The costs vary depending on the extent and nature of the work needed. You will find a general guide to Dental Care Ireland’s fees at our practices here.
What other types of cosmetic dentistry are there?
The main types of cosmetic dentistry similar to dental crowns are dental bridges and dental veneers. Teeth whitening is also a very popular cosmetic treatment, which is also available in all our practices. Dentures are another popular option, particularly for older patients.
Who should get crowns fitted?
Dental crowns can be fitted to patients of all ages as a remedy for cracked, chipped or permanently damaged teeth. They are also also suitable for patients whose teeth have suffered a lot of wear and tear.
Are they effective?
Yes. Dental caps are an extremely effective solution for broken teeth. They are also good value and are very good as an aesthetic solution as well as a practical one.
How long do they last?
Generally dental crowns can last for up to 15 years, though this often depends on the amount of wear and tear they endure.
How long does it take to get them fitted?
At least two appointments with your dentist are needed to fit crowns, with a gap of about two weeks between each one. This is when ‘impressions’ of your teeth are sent to our dental labs to have your unique crowns made.
Why do I need temporary crowns?
Temporary crowns are needed as it takes approximately two weeks for your unique permanent ones to be created.
What are they made of?
Crowns come in different materials, including gold, porcelain and porcelain fused to metal. The type of crown needed will depend on the extent of damage done to the original tooth, as the crown will be fitted on top of this.
What do I have to do after I get crowns?
It is important to look after your dental crowns. Your dentist will give you instructions on how to care for them. It is also worth bearing in mind that your teeth will get naturally darker as you get older while your crowns won’t. There are ways around this which your dentist will guide you on when you have check-ups.

Special offer for children as return to school looms – Free Dental Check-up for Children
Dental Care Ireland is offering a free dental check up for children with all adult examinations booked during August. Here, we also give some tips on children’s oral health.
It always seems to arrive sooner than we think – or would like – but that time of year is almost here again. Most schools reopen in the last week of August, so the rush to get everything sorted starts now.
This, of course, includes buying uniforms, school books, stationery and all the other sundry items that your children will need for the year ahead, such as school bags, lunchboxes, sports uniforms and equipment.
Back-to-school
Another important consideration that shouldn’t be overlooked is the care of your children’s teeth. No matter what age they are, it is crucial for the development of strong, healthy teeth that you make sure your children look after their teeth themselves as well as getting a regular dental check up.
To assist with this, Dental Care Ireland is offering a free back-to-school child’s check-up with all adult examinations booked during August. This offer is available in all our practices around the country (*excludes Callan Dental). You will find a list of practices and their contact details on our website.
Prevention
It is worthwhile bringing your children to the dentist before the school term begins. This way, you can see what stage they’re at, get advice from a professional on brushing methods, and plan a schedule of appointments for the year ahead.
“Prevention is always better than cure, and that also applies to children’s teeth,” says Dr Paul O’Dwyer, Group Clinical Advisor at Dental Care Ireland. “So, in order to give your children the best chance of avoiding problems, make sure they clean their teeth properly and get regular examinations with your local dentist.”
Good habits
Dr Suzanne O’Connor of Dental Care Ireland Knocklyon agrees: “Problems with teeth, such as discomfort and pain, can create various problems for children during the school year, including difficulty eating, playing and learning. It can also lead to missing time from school. This is why we recommend examinations so that these issues can be avoided where possible.”
Our dentists can also tell your children how to brush properly and encourage them to clean regularly. Often, it is beneficial for a child to hear this from a professional so they don’t think it is just their parents ‘nagging’ them.
It is also an excellent time to get children used to going to the dentist. Thanks to our friendly yet professional approach and the latest technology, a trip to the dentist is not something to be anxious about. However, to avoid that occurring, it is vital that children can see how easy and painless it is from a young age.
Eating and drinking
During the summer months, children do tend to eat more treats – including ice-creams, of course – and drink more juices and other sweet drinks. With school about to restart, it is worthwhile keeping an eye on what they’re eating and drinking.
You have control over their lunchboxes, so make sure you are avoiding too many fruit juices and smoothies which have high sugar content. Instead, opt for water or milk. Also try to put in a good balance of grains, milk, cheese, raw vegetables, yoghurt, and fruit.
And it is good to replace sugary snacks – chocolate bars, granola bars, etc. – with healthier options such as vegetables (celery, carrots) or cheese. As we all know, they will get plenty of treats at parties and around Halloween and Christmas, so it’s best to minimise these during term time.
Sport
We all love to see our children competing in some sort of sports activity during the school year, whether it is a team sport such as football, hurling or soccer or just regular physical education (PE).
However, making sure their teeth are protected at all times is also very important. We recommend that children get mouth guards or gum shields fitted just for their teeth in order to get the best protection possible.
Our dentists ‘custom-fit’ mouthguards are molded so that they are the perfect fit for each individual’s mouth and stay in place securely. Children also need these checked each year to make sure they are still fitting properly.

Cosmetic dentistry continues to grow in popularity
Cosmetic dentistry is now available in all Dental Care Ireland practices but which treatments will suit you and how effective are they?
Cosmetic dentistry comes in many different formats, all of which can be used to enhance the look of your teeth while often also strengthening your mouth and jaw. Our teams recommend different types to patients, depending on each person’s particular needs.
What are the different types of cosmetic dentistry?
Teeth whitening is generally seen as the most popular cosmetic treatment, but adult patients of all ages are opting more and more for crowns and veneers. Dentures are also popular with older patients as general wear-and-tear take its toll on our teeth.
How much does cosmetic dentistry cost?
Cosmetic treatments vary in price, with teeth whitening now a very cost-effective treatment. More specialist fixes, such as crowns, often cost more due to the personalised nature of the treatment.
Is there a dentist near me that does teeth whitening?
All Dental Care Ireland practices now offer excellent teeth whitening treatments, including three in Dublin in Cabinteely, Knocklyon and Swords and in our partner practice in Dublin 4 Northumberland Dental Care. View details of all our practices online today.
What is the best way to whiten teeth?
The most effective way to whiten teeth is to do so through your dentist. Our dentists will take an ‘impression’ of your teeth and then create a dental ‘tray’ to fit your upper and lower teeth, much like a mouth guard. We will then provide you with tubes of whitening gel so you can whiten your teeth at home.
Is orthodontic treatment cosmetic?
In general, orthodontic treatment is more specialist than cosmetic as it fixes the shape of your mouth. That said, it is still an effective way to correct crooked teeth, particularly in younger people. However, more and more people of all ages are now using orthodontics to fix misaligned teeth.
Is there an orthodontist near me?
The following Dental Care Ireland practices all offer full orthodontic treatment services: Dental Care Ireland Swords, Dental Care Ireland Cabinteely, Dental Care Ireland Knocklyon, Dental Care Ireland Carlow and Callan Dental. Northumberland Dental Care also offers full orthodontic services.
What are dental crowns?
Dental crowns are fitted over cracked or decayed teeth and essentially act as new teeth if the existing ones cannot be restored using general dental treatments. Each crown is created specifically for your teeth in our partner laboratories.
Should I get composite veneers?
Dental veneers are used to cover defects in your teeth. They are created by your dentist who will take moulds of your teeth on your first visit. These moulds are then used to create veneers to fit over your teeth.
What is the difference between a veneer and composite veneers?
Composite resin veneers and porcelain veneers are the two most commonly used materials when creating veneers for your teeth. Your dentist will be able to advise you which is best for you.
What is dental bonding?
Dental bonding – or dental bond-ups – uses a specially formulated composite material to correct minor issues with your teeth, such as cracks, chips, gaps or discolouration. It ‘fills in’ wherever needed. Northumberland Dental Care in Dublin offers this service.
Do Dental Care Ireland fit dentures?
Yes, this service is offered at Dental Care Ireland practices. Dentures are false teeth which can be removed by the patient when required. They can be either full or partial dentures and are made of acrylic/plastic or metal. Your dentist will let you know when you need these fitted and what type will suit you best.
