New Year, New You: Start 2026 With a Straighter Smile

A new year is the perfect time for a fresh start, and what better way to boost your confidence than with a healthier, straighter smile? Whether you’ve been thinking about orthodontic treatment for yourself or your child, now is the ideal moment to take that first step.

At Dental Care Ireland, we offer a wide range of orthodontic treatments for children, teenagers and adults, across multiple practices nationwide. Whatever your age or lifestyle, we have a solution to suit you.

What Is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry focused on correcting misaligned, crowded or crooked teeth, as well as bite issues. Treatment not only enhances the appearance of your smile but also improves oral health and overall function.

Why Consider Orthodontic Treatment?

1. Improve Your Appearance

Straightening your teeth can dramatically enhance your smile and facial symmetry. Many patients report increased confidence after treatment, helping them feel more comfortable in both social and professional settings.

2. Better Oral Health

Straighter teeth are easier to clean, making brushing and flossing more effective. This reduces your risk of tooth decay, plaque build-up and gum disease in the long term.

3. Improved Function

Correcting spacing or bite issues can improve chewing efficiency, digestion and even speech. Orthodontic treatment supports your overall oral function as well as aesthetics.

Orthodontic Options at Dental Care Ireland

We provide a variety of modern orthodontic solutions, including:

Traditional / Metal Braces

A reliable and effective option, metal braces use brackets and archwires to gradually move teeth into their correct positions.

Clear / Ceramic Braces

These work just like metal braces but are tooth-coloured, making them far less noticeable.

Invisalign®

A popular choice for adults, Invisalign uses a series of custom-made clear aligners. They are removable, comfortable and almost invisible.

Spark Aligners

Spark Aligners are ultra-clear aligners designed to discreetly straighten your teeth over time, perfect if you want results without traditional braces.

Orthodontic Care for Children & Adults

We proudly offer orthodontic treatment for all age groups. Early assessment for children can prevent future issues, while adults can benefit from discreet, modern solutions that fit around busy lifestyles.

2026 PRSI Dental Entitlements – Have You Claimed Yours Yet?

If you pay PRSI, you could be missing out on valuable dental benefits this year! Under The Treatment Benefit Scheme, you may be entitled to an annual oral examination and a subsidised scale & polish from only €15 at any Dental Care Ireland practice nationwide.

What Are Your 2026 PRSI Dental Entitlements?

Dental Care Ireland is a registered provider of The Treatment Benefit Scheme. The Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protectionmanages this. This scheme offers dental, optical, and aural services to insured workers, the self-employed, and retired people who meet the required number of social insurance (PRSI) contributions.

Specifically, the scheme allows you to claim:

  • One free oral examination per calendar year
  • A subsidised scale & polish from only €15

Visiting your dentist regularly is essential. Annual check-ups can detect potential issues early, saving you from more extensive and costly procedures. Regular professional cleaning removes plaque and tartar, prevents cavities, reduces bad breath, and helps keep your gums healthy.

Who Qualifies?

To qualify for 2026 PRSI dental entitlements in 2026, you must have paid class A, E, P, H, or S social insurance (PRSI) contributions. The required amount of contributions depends on your age.

Even if your spouse, civil partner, or cohabitant hasn’t met the contribution threshold, they may still qualify for treatment under your record, provided they are dependent on you.

How to Claim Your 2026 PRSI Dental Entitlements

To check your eligibility or make a claim, simply contact your local Dental Care Ireland practice. You will need:

  • Your Personal Public Service (PPS) Number
  • Date of birth
  • Consent/signature

What Will It Cost?

Dental Examination: Your annual check-up is fully covered under the PRSI scheme for those who are eligible.

Scale and Polish: The scheme contributes towards the cost. For cleanings or periodontal treatments exceeding €42, you’ll only pay the difference. A standard scale and polish is capped at €15, but there is no cap on additional charges for more complex periodontal treatments.

If you need treatments beyond what the PRSI entitlements cover, your dentist will provide a clear explanation of any extra costs beforehand.

Once confirmed, you can book your appointment and enjoy your dental benefits hassle-free.

Why Take Advantage of Your Entitlements?

Early Detection Saves Time and Money: Regular dental check-ups catch potential problems early, making treatment simpler and less costly.

Better Oral Health: Routine scale and polish treatments improve gum health, prevent plaque build-up, and reduce the risk of tooth decay.

Make Your PRSI Work for You: Using your yearly entitlements ensures you’re getting the maximum benefit from your contributions.

Dental Emergencies at Christmas: What You Need to Know

The Christmas season is a time for relaxing, celebrating and spending time with loved ones. But dental emergencies can happen at the most inconvenient times, often right when practices are closed for the holidays. At Dental Care Ireland, we want you to feel prepared, informed, and supported should a dental issue arise during the festive period.

Below, we explain what counts as a dental emergency, what you can do at home for common problems like toothaches, and where you can find emergency dental services if your local practice is closed.

Planning ahead? To see the Christmas opening hours for all our nationwide Dental Care Ireland practices, see here

What Is Considered a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any situation that requires urgent treatment to stop bleeding, alleviate severe pain, or save a tooth. If you experience any of the following, you should seek immediate attention:

  • Severe toothache that does not improve with pain relief
  • Knocked-out or loose adult tooth
  • Broken or fractured tooth, especially if there is pain or sharp edges
  • Dental abscess (swelling, throbbing pain, fever, bad taste)
  • Uncontrolled bleeding following dental treatment or trauma
  • Severe swelling affecting your face, neck or mouth

If you are unsure whether your situation is an emergency, you can visit our FAQ page for more detailed guidance.

Preventive Tips for the Holidays

Avoiding dental emergencies starts before a problem arises. Here are some tips to keep your teeth safe during the festive season:

  • Limit sugary treats and acidic drinks to reduce the risk of tooth decay.
  • Avoid biting very hard foods, like bones, hard sweets, or crusty bread, to prevent chipped teeth.
  • Wear a mouthguard if participating in winter sports or outdoor activities.
  • Keep up with brushing and flossing even when schedules are busy.
  • Schedule a check-up before the holidays if possible to address minor issues before they escalate.

What to Do If You Have a Toothache Over Christmas

Toothaches are one of the most common dental problems during the festive season, especially with the increase in sugary treats. If you develop discomfort:

1. Rinse with warm salt water

This can help reduce inflammation and keep the area clean.

2. Take over-the-counter pain relief

Paracetamol or ibuprofen may help manage pain. Always follow the recommended dosage instructions.

3. Keep the area clean

Gently brush and floss around the sore tooth to remove trapped food that may be causing irritation.

4. Avoid very hot, very cold, or sugary foods

These can worsen sensitivity.

If the pain is severe, persistent, or associated with swelling or fever, you should seek emergency dental help.

National Flossing Day 2025: Why Flossing Matters and How to Do It Right

Flossing is one of the simplest ways to take care of your teeth, yet it’s often overlooked. This Flossing Day, Dental Care Ireland wants to remind everyone that flossing isn’t just an optional step in your oral hygiene routine, it’s essential for maintaining healthy teeth and gums.

While brushing removes plaque from the surfaces of your teeth, it can’t reach the tight spaces in between. Flossing fills this gap, helping to prevent dental problems before they start. To celebrate Flossing Day, we’re sharing the top 5 benefits of flossing your teeth and tips on how to floss correctly.

Top 5 Benefits of Flossing Your Teeth

1. Removes Plaque Between Teeth
Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth. If not removed, it can harden into tartar and lead to cavities. Flossing cleans the areas your toothbrush can’t reach, keeping your teeth smooth and free from plaque buildup.

2. Prevents Gum Disease
Gum disease begins with inflammation caused by trapped food and bacteria. Regular flossing reduces this risk, helping to prevent gingivitis and more serious gum problems, keeping your gums strong and healthy.

3. Reduces Bad Breath
Food particles stuck between teeth can quickly cause unpleasant odors. Flossing removes these particles, helping to keep your breath fresh throughout the day.

4. Supports Overall Health
Oral health is closely linked to overall health. Research suggests that gum disease and inflammation in the mouth may contribute to heart disease, diabetes, and other health issues. Flossing regularly helps reduce harmful bacteria and inflammation.

5. Keeps Your Smile Looking Great
Flossing helps prevent cavities, gum disease, and tooth discoloration caused by plaque buildup. Healthy teeth and gums mean a brighter, cleaner smile that lasts a lifetime.

How to Floss Correctly

To get the full benefits of flossing, technique matters. Here’s how to do it properly:

  1. Use the right amount of floss – About 45 cm (18 inches) works best. Wrap most of it around each middle finger, leaving a small section to work with.
  2. Gently slide between teeth – Don’t snap the floss; instead, guide it carefully to avoid hurting your gums.
  3. Curve around each tooth – Form a “C” shape with the floss around each tooth and move it up and down along the side of the tooth and just under the gumline.
  4. Use a clean section for each tooth – This prevents spreading bacteria from one area to another.
  5. Be consistent – Floss at least once a day, preferably at night before brushing.

If traditional floss is difficult, try alternatives like floss picks, interdental brushes, or water flossers. The key is consistency, even a few minutes a day can make a big difference.

This Flossing Day, take a moment to focus on your oral health. Flossing might seem small, but the benefits are huge. Cleaner teeth, healthier gums, fresher breath, and a smile that truly shines. Make it part of your daily routine, and your mouth will thank you!

Are You Teeth Grinding at Night? Tuam Dentist Shares What You Need to Know

Many people are teeth grinding at night without even realising it, and the effects can build up over time, according to Dr María Fernández of Dental Care Ireland Tuam. The condition, known as bruxism, often occurs during sleep, meaning patients may only notice the signs once discomfort or damage has already set in.

Bruxism can happen for a number of reasons, including stress, anxiety, bite misalignment, or even certain sleep patterns. While the occasional grind is usually harmless, persistent grinding can have a lasting impact, leading to:

  • Worn or chipped teeth
  • Increased sensitivity
  • Jaw stiffness or tightness
  • Morning headaches
  • Damage to fillings, crowns or implants

“Many patients don’t realise they’re grinding until we point out the signs during an examination,” Dr Fernández explains. “By the time discomfort shows up, the teeth may already be under strain.”

How a Night Guard Can Help

One of the most effective ways to prevent further damage is by wearing a custom-made night guard (also called an occlusal splint) while sleeping. The night guard forms a protective barrier between the upper and lower teeth, stopping them from grinding against one another.

While it doesn’t prevent the instinct to grind, it protects the teeth, enables the jaw to relax and reduces the pain and morning tension.

What to Expect If You Get One

At Dental Care Ireland Tuam, the process is straightforward:

1. Examination – Dr Fernández will assess the teeth, gums, and jaw to confirm bruxism and address any underlying concerns.

2. Impressions or Digital Scans – A precise mould of the teeth is taken.

3. Custom Manufacture – The night guard is made in a specialist dental lab to ensure a comfortable, accurate fit.

4. Fitting Appointment – Once ready (usually 2–3 weeks), the guard is checked and adjusted for optimal comfort.

Patients also receive guidance on care so the device lasts as long as possible.

A Recommended Option: The Michigan or Tanner Splint

In cases of moderate to severe grinding, Dr Fernández frequently recommends the Michigan or Tanner Splint. These splints are:

  • Durable and long-lasting
  • Designed to ease muscle tension and support the jaw
  • Custom-fitted for comfort and stability
  • Highly effective in reducing tooth wear

This level of precision is not possible with over-the-counter night guards, which can be bulky, loose, or uncomfortable.

Think You May Be Grinding Your Teeth?

If you’re waking with jaw tightness, sensitivity, or headaches, it may be time to have your bite assessed.

Don’t Miss Out: Claim Your PRSI Dental Benefits Before the Year Ends! 🦷

It’s hard to believe we’re already nearing the end of the year, but there’s still time to make the most of your PRSI dental entitlements before they expire! At Dental Care Ireland, we want to ensure that every eligible patient benefits from this valuable government-supported scheme, because once the year is over, your unused benefit is gone for good.

What Does PRSI Cover?

Under the Treatment Benefit Scheme, eligible PRSI contributors can receive one free dental examination per calendar year, plus a subsidised cleaning treatment.

You can choose either:

  • 🪥 A Scale and Polish: a professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar, keeping your smile bright and healthy.
Cost: Just €15 for eligible patients.

OR

  • 🦷 A Subsidised Periodontal (Deep Cleaning) Treatment: recommended for patients with gum disease or significant tartar build-up below the gum line. This more advanced cleaning is carried out under local anaesthetic when necessary.

Your dentist will recommend which option best suits your individual oral health needs after your exam.

Please note: other treatments such as fillings or extractions are not covered under the PRSI scheme.

Who Qualifies for PRSI Dental Benefits?

The Treatment Benefit Scheme is run by the Department of Social Protection (DSP) and is available to:

  • Employees paying PRSI
  • Self-employed individuals (including farmers and business owners)
  • Retirees who have built up sufficient PRSI contributions

Your eligibility depends on how many PRSI contributions you’ve made and your age. Even if your spouse or partner doesn’t have enough contributions themselves, they may still qualify under your record so it’s always worth checking!

How to Check If You’re Eligible

Checking couldn’t be easier!
Just contact your local Dental Care Ireland practice and provide your:

  • PPS Number
  • Date of Birth

Our team will check your PRSI status with the Department of Social Protection and confirm one of the following:

  1. Approved: You’re entitled to a free exam and a cleaning for just €15.
  2. Pending: Your eligibility is being reviewed and we’ll let you know once it’s confirmed.
  3. Not Approved: You can still book a private exam and cleaning to stay on top of your oral health.

Why You Should Claim Before It’s Too Late

Your PRSI dental benefits renew every January, and unused benefits do not carry over into the next year.
That means if you haven’t used your entitlement for 2025, you’ll lose it when the calendar resets.

Regular dental visits aren’t just about keeping your smile looking good, they help catch small issues before they become bigger, more costly problems. Using your PRSI benefit now could save you both time and money down the line.

Don’t Let Your PRSI Benefit Go to Waste

As December approaches, appointments fill up fast across our practices nationwide.
So if you haven’t booked your PRSI exam and cleaning yet, now’s the perfect time to do it!

📞 Call your local Dental Care Ireland practice today to check your eligibility and schedule your visit.
Let’s make sure your smile, and your PRSI benefit, don’t go to waste this year!

Wisdom Teeth: What You Need to Know

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last set of teeth to emerge, usually appearing between the ages of 17 and 25. While some people experience no issues, others may face complications that require removal. At Dental Care Ireland, we aim to keep you informed about wisdom teeth and ensure you receive the best care if extraction or treatment is needed.

“With careful planning and expert care, wisdom teeth can be managed smoothly, helping you maintain a healthy, confident smile.” –  Dr. Emilio Cecemore

Why Wisdom Teeth Can Cause Problems

Wisdom teeth can sometimes grow misaligned, partially erupted, or trapped beneath the gumline. This can lead to:

  • Pain and discomfort in the back of the jaw
  • Swelling and gum irritation
  • Infections or cyst formation around the tooth
  • Damage to adjacent teeth
  • Crowding or misalignment of other teeth

Regular dental check-ups and X-rays can help monitor wisdom teeth and identify potential problems early, preventing more complex issues later.

When Should We Remove Wisdom Teeth?

You do not always need to extract wisdom teeth, but dentists usually recommend removing them if they:

  • Cause pain or discomfort
  • Lead to repeated infections
  • Are at risk of damaging nearby teeth
  • Contribute to gum disease or cavities in hard-to-clean areas

Our team carefully evaluates each case to determine whether extraction is necessary and ensures a safe, comfortable procedure if required.

Spooky Smiles: How to Keep Your Teeth Healthy This Halloween

It’s that time of year again, pumpkins glowing in windows, spooky decorations, fancy dress, and of course…sweets! While Halloween is all about treats and fun, your teeth shouldn’t get tricked by sugar. At Dental Care Ireland, with practices all over the country, we’re here to make sure your smile stays healthy this Halloween season.

The Sweet Scare: How Sugar Affects Your Teeth

We all know that too many sweets can lead to cavities, but some treats are trickier than others. Sticky toffees, chewy caramels, and sour sweets can cling to teeth and give bacteria plenty of fuel to cause decay. Chocolate is usually the safer choice, it’s easier to clean off and less likely to stick.

Tips for a Tooth-Friendly Halloween

Keeping your smile safe during Halloween doesn’t have to be scary. Here are some simple tips:

  1. Choose Your Sweets Wisely: Chocolate is better than sticky or chewy treats.
  2. Brush and Floss: Keep up with your normal routine, even on Halloween night.
  3. Rinse with Water: If brushing isn’t possible straight away, swish some water to help wash away sugar.
  4. Time Your Treats: Enjoy sweets with meals instead of snacking constantly to reduce the risk of cavities.

Busting Halloween Dental Myths

  • Carrots aren’t magic teeth protectors, but they are crunchy, healthy, and help clean teeth naturally.
  • Sugar-free sweets still need care, they’re better than regular treats, but brushing afterwards is still important.

Your Local Practices are Here to Help

Dental Care Ireland has practices nationwide. After all the sweets have been enjoyed, it’s the perfect time to book a check-up or clean to keep your teeth healthy and bright.

Trick or Treat… Give Your Smile a Treat!

Don’t let cavities haunt your smile this Halloween. Follow these tips, enjoy your sweets wisely, and remember, your local Dental Care Ireland practice is always here to help. From our practices across Ireland, we wish you a fun, safe, and tooth-friendly Halloween!
