Our Whitening Process:

Consultation: First, the dentist will examine your teeth to ensure you are suitable for teeth whitening. This will include a check-up and may include some x-rays of your teeth. Some reasons that you may not be suitable could be gum disease, tooth decay or hypersensitivity. It is also important to note that teeth whitening only works on actual tooth structure – crowns, veneers or tooth-coloured fillings will not whiten.

Impressions: Once your dentist confirms suitability, they will work with you to identify the shade you wish to achieve. Your dentist will be able to advise you on what outcome you are likely to achieve before you begin as this can vary from person to person. Impressions will then be taken of your teeth so that customised whitening trays can be made for you.

Treatment at Home: Teeth whitening trays and gel are used at home for approximately 7 to 14 days. This depends on the shade you wish to achieve and the strength of whitening gels used. You may experience some sensitivity during this process, but this is very common and will disappear a few days after you finish your whitening treatment. If you usually have sensitive teeth, it may be helpful to use sensitive toothpaste before and during the whitening process.

Post-Treatment Care: After the initial application, you can purchase extra whitening gels which you can use to “top-up” your teeth to keep them looking nice and white. It is also important to note that tea, coffee, red wine and smoking cause staining of the teeth, and therefore regular hygienist appointments are recommended to keep your smile clean and white following treatment.

Vaping and Oral Health: What Do I Need To Know?

E-cigarettes have become increasingly popular in recent years, especially among young adults and teenagers. The use of e-cigarettes, also known as vaping, is often seen as a safer alternative to smoking tobacco cigarettes. While this may be the case, there is mounting evidence to suggest that vaping still poses significant risks to oral health. Below, Dr Jennifer Collins, Clinical Director of Dental Care Ireland, discusses the harmful effects vaping has on our oral health.

Nicotine harms your oral health

E-cigarettes contain a liquid mixture of nicotine, flavourings, and other chemicals. When heated, the liquid turns into an aerosol, which is then inhaled. Nicotine is one of the most harmful chemicals found in e-cigarettes. It can cause a range of oral health problems, including gum disease and tooth loss. Nicotine also reduces blood flow to the gums, making it harder for them to heal from infections, injuries or dental procedures. This is why we advise you to avoid vaping after a dental procedure.

Nicotine can also cause yellow staining on your teeth. While this type of staining is usually associated with tobacco cigarettes, e-cigarettes can also do this to your teeth. If you wish to keep your smile pearly white, it is best to avoid vaping.

The flavourings used in e-cigarettes also pose a risk to oral health. Many of these flavourings contain chemicals that can irritate the mouth and throat. Some flavourings can also damage the enamel on the teeth, leading to tooth sensitivity and cavities.

Vaping can lead to dry mouth

Another issue with vaping is that it dries out the mouth. A dry mouth can lead to a host of oral health problems, including bad breath, tooth decay, and gum disease. When the mouth is dry, there is less saliva to wash away harmful bacteria, food particles, and other debris. This can lead to a build-up of plaque and tartar, which can cause cavities and gum disease.

Vaping is not a healthy habit

While we are only beginning to learn about the adverse effects of vaping for your oral health, it is becoming evident that vaping is not as safe as we may have initially assumed. However, e-cigarettes are certainly better for your oral health than tobacco cigarettes. This makes vaping a good segway for those trying to quit smoking, but it’s certainly not a good decision to start vaping from scratch! Unfortunately, we are seeing young people and teenagers beginning to vape even if they have never smoked before, which is not a trend we want to see.

Finally, if you do vape, make sure you are drinking plenty of water, keep up a good oral health routine, visit your dentist regularly, and do consider cutting back or quitting; your mouth will thank you for it!

Dental Care Ireland Navan Scoops Major Award

Our Meath practice Dental Care Ireland Navan has won the Most Improved Practice award at the Irish Dentistry Awards

We were delighted that the Navan Dental Care Ireland practice won the prestigious Most Improved Practice award at the recent Irish Dentistry awards. This is testament to all the hard work the team have put in over the past few years. They really deserved to win and all of us here in Dental Care Ireland are so proud of their achievement.

The award was presented at the Irish Dentistry Awards ceremony which took place on February 29th in the Round Room of the Mansion House in Dublin.

This practice was originally called the Cosgrave Practice and became part of the Dental Care Ireland group in May 2016. It has grown since then and has had a renovation. Located on Watergate Street and still led by principal dentist Dr William Cosgrave, it offers a professional and family-friendly service to the local community in Navan. Its team of dentists, hygienists, dental nurses and admin staff offer general dentistry, orthodontics and cosmetic treatments from its state-of-the-art premises.

Bright, new practice for dentist in Navan

Dental Care Ireland Navan practice manager Jessica Tobin is delighted that the dentist in Navan has undergone such a successful relocation

Even though Dental Care Ireland Navan just relocated at the end of January 2019, the practice has deep roots in the community. “Our initial location in Navan was originally a doctor’s practice, and then our own Dr Bill Cosgrave took it over 47 years ago,” says Jessica Tobin, practice manager at Dental Care Ireland Navan.

“He was in his 20s then, and now in his 70s he’s still a huge part of this practice. Even now he still lectures and just received a fellowship in dentistry,” she says.

Great reputation

“Because we’ve been around for so long, we are well established in the community with a great reputation. Dental Care Ireland took over the running of the practice in summer 2016, then we relocated to this lovely, bright practice at the end of January 2019.”

It’s fair to say that experience and local know-how is at the heart of this dentist in Navan. “Dr Maura McGuinness has been here for a year, but prior to that she was in our Kells practice for 30 years, and Dr David Kelly has been here for 13 years,” says Jessica.

“I’ve been working with Dental Care Ireland for three years – initially I was based in Kells, where I now live, but I relocated a little while ago. I grew up in Navan so I’m very familiar with both towns!”

Community benefits

There are a number of staff in our dentist in Navan who can cater for the community’s needs. “We currently have 12 staff working here in Navan – there are three dentists, a hygienist, a receptionist, six dental nurses and myself, the practice manager,” says Jessica.

“We mostly focus on general dental treatments, but one of our dentists does perform minor orthodontic treatments for routine braces work. An orthodontist will be starting with us soon, which is great for the whole team and community,” she says.

Ideal location

The new dental practice has caused quite a stir around the town. “Since we opened the new practice we’ve had lots of interest from locals, and plenty of walk-ins. We’re right in the middle of town beside the shopping centre, close to lots of local businesses with plenty of parking, so it’s ideal,” says Jessica.

“We’re very involved with the community – we offer services to retired nuns and priests just up the road in Dalgan Park, for example. It’s fantastic to be able to give something back.”

The team spirit generated by the staff really helps. “We get on really well as a team. We have regular nights out and just had lunch recently to celebrate the move to the new practice. We’re all different age groups here so it’s a great mix that helps morale. We interact really well together,” she says.

Everyone leaves happy

The primary goal of every Dental Care Ireland practice is to ensure that the patient experience is as good as it can be. So, what does this dentist in Navan do to help put patients’ minds at ease?

“For starters, we’re child-friendly as well as patient-friendly – and look to establish a good rapport with all our patients,” says Jessica. “We’ve been here so long that our staff know most of the patients anyway, so we know if they have special needs or if they need to come to see us at a particular time.

“We have two iPads for children as well as a TV in reception, so people are generally relaxed when they see us. Sometimes patients want to know exactly what’s happening and we are happy to tell them. Others don’t want to know and that’s fine too. Regardless, everyone leaves happy from here. That’s what we want to see!”

The patient experience is definitely helped by the new practice. “It really makes a difference – it’s on a corner and the sun is always shining in. It’s so bright and clean, with a spacious reception area. We’re wheelchair-friendly too and have the price list up so people know exactly how much everything costs. We like to be as transparent as possible. We’re just a seven-minute walk from the old practice, so it’s just around the corner,” says Jessica.

It’s a great new addition to a bustling town. “Navan has gotten so busy in the last few years, it’s great to be here. There are lots of nice places to see and it’s full of familiar faces. I love working here.”
