Vaping and Oral Health: What Do I Need To Know?

E-cigarettes have become increasingly popular in recent years, especially among young adults and teenagers. The use of e-cigarettes, also known as vaping, is often seen as a safer alternative to smoking tobacco cigarettes. While this may be the case, there is mounting evidence to suggest that vaping still poses significant risks to oral health. Below, Dr Jennifer Collins, Clinical Director of Dental Care Ireland, discusses the harmful effects vaping has on our oral health.

Nicotine harms your oral health

E-cigarettes contain a liquid mixture of nicotine, flavourings, and other chemicals. When heated, the liquid turns into an aerosol, which is then inhaled. Nicotine is one of the most harmful chemicals found in e-cigarettes. It can cause a range of oral health problems, including gum disease and tooth loss. Nicotine also reduces blood flow to the gums, making it harder for them to heal from infections, injuries or dental procedures. This is why we advise you to avoid vaping after a dental procedure.

Nicotine can also cause yellow staining on your teeth. While this type of staining is usually associated with tobacco cigarettes, e-cigarettes can also do this to your teeth. If you wish to keep your smile pearly white, it is best to avoid vaping.

The flavourings used in e-cigarettes also pose a risk to oral health. Many of these flavourings contain chemicals that can irritate the mouth and throat. Some flavourings can also damage the enamel on the teeth, leading to tooth sensitivity and cavities.

Vaping can lead to dry mouth

Another issue with vaping is that it dries out the mouth. A dry mouth can lead to a host of oral health problems, including bad breath, tooth decay, and gum disease. When the mouth is dry, there is less saliva to wash away harmful bacteria, food particles, and other debris. This can lead to a build-up of plaque and tartar, which can cause cavities and gum disease.

Vaping is not a healthy habit

While we are only beginning to learn about the adverse effects of vaping for your oral health, it is becoming evident that vaping is not as safe as we may have initially assumed. However, e-cigarettes are certainly better for your oral health than tobacco cigarettes. This makes vaping a good segway for those trying to quit smoking, but it’s certainly not a good decision to start vaping from scratch! Unfortunately, we are seeing young people and teenagers beginning to vape even if they have never smoked before, which is not a trend we want to see.

Finally, if you do vape, make sure you are drinking plenty of water, keep up a good oral health routine, visit your dentist regularly, and do consider cutting back or quitting; your mouth will thank you for it!

Dentist in Knocklyon gets a sparkling makeover

Dental Care Ireland Knocklyon practice manager Finnola Jones discusses how a recent makeover has made a huge difference for this dentist in Knocklyon

Dental Care Ireland’s practice in Knocklyon, Dublin 16, is conveniently located in Knocklyon Shopping Centre. Even though it rebranded as a Dental Care Ireland practice in June 2015, this dentist in Knocklyon is a mainstay in the community, having been operating there since 1992.

Strong links with the community

“Our principal dentist, Dr Vincent McDonagh, managed a one-surgery practice here for years, so he has built up very strong links with the community,” says Finnola Jones, practice manager with Dental Care Ireland Knocklyon.

“The practice has been transformed in the last couple of years; we have taken on five people since Dental Care Ireland became involved. Now, we have three dentists, one orthodontist, four dental nurses and myself.”

A complete refurbishment

As the number of staff has grown, so too has the practice itself. “We recently underwent a complete refurbishment, and took on additional space,” says Finnola.

“We added another surgery and a brand-new reception area to the practice to deal with increasing demand, and also improved our visibility. Beforehand, our unit has a little hidden away from the public, but now we’re front and centre in the shopping centre so people know we’re here!”

‘It’s the nicest surgery I’ve ever been in!’

This investment has certainly paid dividends with the community. “We’re gotten lots of comments from our patients, who are really impressed with the new look of the practice,” says Finnola. “It used to be a little old-fashioned, but now it really catches the eye. To be honest, it’s the nicest surgery I’ve ever worked in, or been in full stop!”

The dentist in Knocklyon offers all the general dental treatments like fillings, x-rays, crowns and extractions. However, it has also responded to demand by adding orthodontic treatment. “We have an orthodontist, Dr Lian O’Dwyer, who looks after patients who are looking for this treatment. It really is becoming more and more popular among both children and adults,” says Finnola.

We’ve doubled our capacity

It is clear that this dentist in Knocklyon is benefitting hugely from the revamp. “We’re just so busy at the moment,” says Finnola. “We’ve doubled our capacity after the renovation, and we really needed to because the demand was there. Knocklyon is a really family-focused area, and we see that demographic reflected in the patients who come into the practice.”

Everything that Finnola and the team do is focused on providing patients with a better experience. “Our top priority is making sure that our patients are comfortable,” she says. “We try to be friendly to everyone who walks in the door, and maintain an upbeat atmosphere. That’s a great formula, whether it’s with Vincent’s patients who he’s been treating since the 1990s, or some of the new patients who are coming in all the time.”

Making patients feel at ease

“Because we have lots of families and younger patients coming in, it’s so important to recognise that they can be a little bit nervous. Our dentists are fantastic at recognising this and making patients feel really at ease,” says Finnola.

The team are delighted to be operating in Knocklyon, and dealing with such a great community. “I’m originally from Wicklow, but it’s been brilliant working in Knocklyon,” says Finnola. “Everyone is so friendly and they’re delighted to see a local practice with staff that they know so well getting such an impressive makeover.”

Increasing interest in orthodontics in south Dublin and around the country has seen this specialist treatment introduced by Dental Care Ireland

Orthodontics is defined as the treatment of irregularities in the teeth and jaws. In times past, this treatment was generally confined to children in their teenage years, but this is no longer the case. Dr Lian O’Dwyer, our resident orthodontics specialist, says that the treatment varies, depending on the patient. “The best age for orthodontics varies from patient to patient. The technology surrounding the treatment of orthodontics has improved hugely over recent years. Braces have come a long way in recent years, and now there is a varied choice for both children and adults when it comes to specialized orthodontic work, according to our Knocklyon orthodontist Dr Lian O’Dwyer

How do I know if my child needs braces?

There are many reasons why a child might benefit from braces. Often, your child’s dentist will be the first to notice problems during a regular visit and recommend that you see a specialist orthodontist. The orthodontist can decide whether your child does indeed need braces and which devices would be best.

Some signs that a child may benefit from braces include:

Early, late, or irregular loss of baby teeth
Difficulty in chewing or biting
Crowding, misplaced, or blocked-out teeth
Jaws that shift or make sounds
Biting the cheek or roof of the mouth
Teeth that meet abnormally or not at all
Jaws and teeth that are out of proportion to the rest of the face

What causes the need for braces?

Sometimes tooth and jaw problems can be caused by losing baby teeth too soon, accidents, or habits like thumb sucking. If there is not enough room in the jaws for the teeth they become crowed or crooked. Often tooth and jaw problems are inherited, so if you or someone in your family needed braces, it’s likely that your kids will too.

At what age should my child be examined for orthodontic care?

Some children may benefit from an orthodontic evaluation as young as age 5 or 6 and others can wait until the baby teeth have fallen out and the permanent teeth are coming into place (ages 10-13).

Your general or pediatric dentist will help you determine the best time for evaluation and treatment. The Orthodontic Society of Ireland recommends that you bring your child for an orthodontic assessment at approximately 7 or 8 years of age.

Starting the process early doesn’t mean a child will get braces right away. It just means the orthodontist will be able to assess the child’s situation and decide the best time to start treatment.

What is the best age to be fitted with braces?

The best age varies from patient to patient. Orthodontic treatment most commonly begins between ages 8 and 14. Children in this age range have at least some permanent teeth and are still growing.

Some problems, however, are best addressed early, even while mostly baby teeth are present. A specialist orthodontist will be able to advise you on the appropriate time to start any treatment that may be indicated. It is never too late to have treatment. As long as your teeth and gums are healthy there is no age limit to treatment, and an increasing number of adults are availing of the benefits of orthodontics.

What types of braces are available?

Traditional/Metal braces
Metal braces continue to be the most popular choice for children and adolescents. The individual brackets are cemented to each tooth and an archwire is attached to apply a continuous gentle pressure to the teeth.
Clear/Ceramic braces
Ceramic or “clear braces” are tooth coloured so that they blend in with your teeth and are much less noticeable than metal braces. For this reason they are very popular with adult patients.
Invisalign™ clear aligners
Invisalign™ braces straighten teeth using a series of clear plastic aligners which are custom-made for your mouth. They are popular with adults as the aligners are removable and are barely visible. Ask your orthodontist if you are a candidate for the Invisalign brace system.
Removable appliances and Functional appliances
- Removable braces are mostly used in early orthodontic treatments for children such as to correct a single tooth, expanding the dental arch or to correct deep bites. Sometimes they are used prior to fixed braces.
- A functional appliance is a removable brace that is used in growing children to help reposition the lower jaw in a more forward position. They are typically used in children who have an “increased overjet” i.e. a large gap between their top and bottom teeth and often a lower jaw which is “short” compared to the upper jaw.
