Braces Myths Busted: The Truth about Kids Braces
There is an abunace of myths surronding braces, especially when it comes to kids braces. As a parents or caregiver, it’s important to get the facts straight before making any decisions about orthodontic care. Dr Gina Kilfeather, Group Orthodontic Advisor at Dental Care Ireland is here to bust some of the most common braces myths and give you the truth behind these popular misconceptions.
Myth #1: Kids Braces are just for cosmetic purposes
While braces do improve the appearance of teeth, their main purpose is to address alignment issues that affect your child’s oral health. Misaligned teeth can lead to biting, chewing and speaking problems as well as an increased risk of tooth decay, gum disease and jaw pain.
Myth #2: Braces are painful
During treatment, some discomfort may occur when braces are first put on or adjusted. However, this is usually manageable and temporary. Any soreness typically lasts a few days and can be relieved with over-the-counter pain relief. Today’s braces are designed for maximum comfort.
Myth #3: Kids should wait until they’re teenagers to get Braces
Orthodontic treatments can begin as early as age seven. Early intervention can help identify issues such as overcrowding or bite problems before they become more difficult to fix. Addressing these problems earlier rather than later often leads to quicker and less invasive treatment.
Myth #4: Braces are high mainteanance
Braces do require more care than regular teeth, however it is not as hard as people may think! Brushing after every meal and avoiding sticky or hard foods will keep braces clean and functional. Flossing and regular dental visits are also important to maintain oral health.
Myth #5: Treatment with Braces takes years
While treatment duration can vary, many cases are completed in one to three years. With advancements in orthodontic technology, treatment is becoming even faster and more efficient.

Orthodontic Care for Kids: Smiles That Last a Lifetime
Are you researching kid’s braces?
Dr Alex has all of your answers!
At Dental Care Ireland Cabinteely, we believe every child deserves a smile they can feel confident about. With years of experience in kids braces, Dr Alex Lite offers tailored treatments starting from age five. Let’s explore why early orthodontic care can make a world of difference for your child.
Why Start Orthodontic Care Early?
Children’s teeth and jaws are still growing, which means that early intervention can guide their development. Starting orthodontic assessments around age five allows us to:
- Spot Potential Problems Early: Issues like overcrowding, bite misalignment, and jaw growth discrepancies can be identified and treated very easily without invasive treatments before they become more severe.
- Simplify Future Treatment: Early care can often reduce the need for more complex treatments later, such as extractions or surgery.
- Boost Confidence: Correcting a child’s smile early can prevent teasing and build self-esteem during critical developmental years.
Signs Your Child May Need Orthodontic Care
While regular check-ups with your family dentist are essential, some signs might suggest the need for orthodontic care:
- Crowded or overlapping teeth or lack of gaps in the primary teeth.
- Jaw deviation or protrusion.
- Prolonged thumb sucking or pacifier use.
- Difficulty biting or chewing or swallowing.
- Teeth grinding or clenching.
- Early or late loss of baby teeth.
- Noticeable jaw misalignment or clicking sounds.
If you notice any of these signs, an orthodontic consultation with Dr Alex Lite could be the next step.
What to Expect During the First Visit
Dr Alex Lite ensures that every child’s first visit is a comfortable and positive experience. Here’s what happens:
- Initial Consultation: We take time to get to know you and your child, addressing any concerns you may have.
- Comprehensive Exam: A detailed assessment of your child’s, face, breathing, teeth, gums, jaw, and overall oral health is conducted.
- Treatment Plan: If treatment is needed, we create a customised plan tailored to your child’s specific needs and explain every step.
Kid-Friendly Orthodontic Solutions
Dr Alex Lite offers a range of kids braces, including:
- Neuro-occlusal rehabilitation: When adult teeth are not erupted yet and there are jaw discrepancies, this effective and non-invasive treatment can prevent major problems such as jaw surgery.
- Removable Appliances: Perfect for guiding jaw development or addressing simple alignment issues.
- Braces: Available in child-friendly designs to make the experience fun and engaging.
- Clear Aligners: Ideal for kids and teenagers as they can remove them to eat and brush their teeth, while moving their teeth and jaw without discomfort.
Building Healthy Habits Together
Orthodontic care is a partnership between Dr Alex Lite, your child, and you as parents. We work together to:
- Emphasise the importance of good oral hygiene building good habits for their future.
- Encourage regular check-ups and adjustments.
- Foster a positive attitude towards dental care.

Before & Afters

Understanding PRSI Dental Entitlements in 2025
For many people in Ireland, understanding how your PRSI (Pay Related Social Insurance) contributions can benefit you at the dentist is crucial for maintaining good oral health. Whether you have been availing of these benefits for years or are new to the workforce, it is helpful to keep up to date with the latest information. In 2025, the PRSI scheme continues to provide support to eligible individuals looking to manage their dental care costs.
What Is the PRSI Dental Scheme?
The PRSI Dental Scheme, administered by the Department of Social Protection, helps qualifying PRSI contributors to save on essential dental treatments. Under this scheme, eligible patients are entitled to:
- One free dental examination per year
- A subsidised scale and polish, or where clinically necessary, a periodontal treatment
The PRSI scheme is designed to encourage preventative care and early detection of dental issues, helping to keep treatment costs as low as possible for you over the long term.
Who Is Eligible in 2025?
Eligibility for PRSI dental entitlements depends on your PRSI contribution history. The general rule is:
- You must be currently paying PRSI in Class A, E, P, H, or S.
- You must have a minimum number of paid contributions – usually 39 weeks of PRSI payments made over a specified timeframe.
- You can also qualify if you are a dependent spouse or civil partner of an eligible person, provided certain conditions are met.
The good news is that once you are approved for the scheme, you can claim the benefits annually. If you are unsure about your eligibility, you can check by contacting Dental Care Ireland or the Department of Social Protection directly.
How to Check Your Entitlements?
Contact your local Dental Care Ireland practice – We can help you verify whether you meet the requirements. Our friendly team will take some basic details and check the Department of Social Protection’s records to confirm your eligibility.
What Does It Cost?
- Dental Examination: The annual check-up is fully covered by the PRSI scheme for eligible patients.
- Scale and Polish: The scheme covers part of the cost. If the cost of either cleaning or periodontal treatment is more than €42, you must pay the balance – it is capped at €15 for a scale and polish. There is no cap on the balance charged for periodontal treatment.
If you require more extensive treatments beyond what is covered by PRSI entitlements, your dentist will discuss the costs with you in advance.
Why Use Your Entitlements?
- Prevention Is Better Than Cure: Regular check-ups help catch any dental issues early, often making treatment less invasive and less expensive.
- Improved Oral Health: A scale and polish can greatly improve gum health, reduce plaque build-up, and help prevent tooth decay.
- Save Money: Availing of your annual entitlements ensures you are making the most out of your PRSI contributions.
How Dental Care Ireland Can Help?
At Dental Care Ireland, we are committed to making the PRSI process as smooth as possible. Whether you are a new or returning patient, our team provides comprehensive services including:
- Quick eligibility checks and assistance with relevant paperwork
- Friendly advice and guidance on your entitlements
- High-quality dental care
Next Steps
If you have not yet availed of your PRSI entitlements this year, consider booking an appointment at your local Dental Care Ireland practice. Our experienced dentists and dedicated support team will guide you through the process, ensuring you get the best possible care under the scheme.
How to Protect Your Teeth This Halloween
Halloween is right around the corner, and while it’s a time for spooky fun, costumes, and sweets, it’s also a time to keep oral health in mind. At Dental Care Ireland, we know how tempting it can be to indulge in sweet treats during this festive season, but we’re here to ensure your smile stays as bright and healthy as ever. Here are some essential tips to protect your teeth from the scary side effects of Halloween sugar.
Choose Your Treats Wisely
Not all Halloween sweets are created equal! Sticky and chewy candies like toffees and gummies cling to your teeth, which can increase the risk of tooth decay. Instead, opt for chocolates, which are easier to wash away and less likely to cause cavities. Dark chocolate, in particular, can be a better option as it contains less sugar and even boasts some health benefits.
Limit the Amount of Sugary Treats
It’s easy to get caught up in the fun and munch on sweets all day long. Try to limit the frequency of snacking on sugary foods, as constant exposure to sugar increases the chances of tooth decay. Enjoy your treats in moderation, ideally after meals, when saliva production is higher to help rinse away sugars and neutralise acids.
Stay Hydrated
After indulging in sugary snacks, drinking plenty of water is a great way to help rinse away food particles and sugar that can cling to teeth. Water also encourages saliva production, which is the mouth’s natural defence against plaque build-up and acid.
Maintain Your Brushing and Flossing Routine
The excitement of Halloween can sometimes make it easy to forget the basics. Make sure that even during the festivities, you stick to your regular brushing and flossing routine. Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing once a day helps remove any sugary remnants and keeps your teeth healthy.
Schedule a Post-Halloween Check-Up
If you’ve overindulged in sweets, there’s no better time to visit us for a check-up. Regular dental visits help catch any issues early and keep your oral health in tip-top shape. We can also give your teeth a professional clean, which is the perfect way to ensure your post-Halloween smile is cavity-free.
Be Mindful of Your Children’s Dental Health
Halloween is a magical time for children, but it’s important to help them avoid the long-term effects of too much sugar. Encourage them to eat their sweets in moderation, ensure they follow a good oral hygiene routine, and perhaps even exchange some of their sugary treats for healthier snacks.
Consider Sugar-Free Alternatives
Many shops now offer sugar-free versions of classic Halloween treats. These can be a great alternative for enjoying the spooky season without worrying as much about cavities. If you’re giving out sweets to trick-or-treaters, why not offer some sugar-free options too?
A Healthy Halloween Starts with Dental Care Ireland
Halloween is meant to be fun, and with a few simple steps, you can enjoy the holiday without worrying about your oral health. If you’d like to discuss more ways to protect your teeth, or if you need to book an appointment post-Halloween, our friendly team at Dental Care Ireland is here to help.

Teeth Straightening for Adults: Your Guide to Modern Orthodontic Options
With advancements in orthodontic technology, adults now have more options than ever to achieve a straighter smile. Clear aligners and discreet braces are transforming how teeth straightening is approached, making it easier and less invasive for patients of all ages. We spoke with our specialist orthodontists to address some frequently asked questions about adult braces. Whether you’re curious about treatment options, the benefits of Invisalign, or wondering if braces are right for you, our experts provide valuable insights below.
Am I too old for braces?
As long as your teeth and gums are healthy, there is no upper age limit for orthodontic treatment. More adults are choosing braces later in life, whether for cosmetic reasons or to correct long-standing dental issues.
Can I straighten my teeth discreetly?
Yes, modern orthodontic technologies offer a variety of comfortable, minimally invasive, and nearly invisible options, including:
- Aligners, such as Invisalign, which use a series of clear and removable plastic trays.
- Ceramic braces, which are tooth-coloured and blend in naturally with teeth.
- Lingual braces, applied with metal brackets on the back of teeth rather than the front.
Which treatment option is best for me?
The most suitable treatment depends on your specific orthodontic needs. Your orthodontist can recommend the best option, which may sometimes involve a combination of Invisalign and traditional braces.
Is Invisalign suitable for everybody?
While Invisalign is an excellent choice for many, it may not address all orthodontic concerns. Your orthodontist will assess your teeth’s shape and position, and any previous treatments like dental bridges, veneers, or crowns, to determine if Invisalign is right for you.
What are the benefits of Invisalign?
Invisalign offers several benefits, including its nearly invisible appearance. You can also remove the aligners to eat, brush, or floss as usual. Since the aligners are custom-made from a 3D scan of your teeth, progress visits are kept to a minimum.
When are braces a better choice than Invisalign?
Braces can address a wider range of dental and facial issues. If you have multiple or complex problems, braces often provide the necessary strength and precision to correct them. While braces may be more visible, they are often the most effective option for certain orthodontic treatments.
How long will orthodontic treatment take?
The duration of treatment depends on the type and extent of the correction required, typically ranging from six months to two years. Adults may take slightly longer than children, as their facial bones are no longer growing. Your orthodontist will give you a more accurate estimate during your consultation.
Where do I start?
If you’re considering adult braces, start by consulting your general dentist. They will assess the health of your teeth and gums and, if suitable, refer you to an orthodontic specialist. Find your local dentist here.

Back to School: Keeping Your Child’s Oral Health on Track
As the new school term settles in and routines take shape, it’s essential to prioritise your child’s oral health. Establishing good dental care habits now will help ensure a healthy smile throughout the year.
Establishing a Routine
The start of the school year is the perfect time to establish or reinforce a strong oral hygiene routine. Brushing teeth twice daily, for at least two minutes, is the cornerstone of good oral health. Encourage your child to brush thoroughly, reaching all areas of their mouth. A small, pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste is recommended for children over three years old.
Remember to floss! It’s just as important as brushing and helps to remove food particles and plaque from between teeth, where brushes can’t always reach. Flossing should become a daily habit for all of us, not just the kids. While it may take some practice, developing this skill early on will set your child up for a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.
Nutritious Lunches and Snacks
What your child eats at school plays a significant role in their oral health. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains supports strong teeth and gums. However, sugary snacks and drinks can lead to tooth decay, especially when consumed frequently throughout the day.
Consider packing your child’s lunch with tooth-friendly foods like cheese, yoghurt, and crunchy vegetables. Cheese and yoghurt are not only great sources of calcium, which strengthens enamel, but they also help to neutralise harmful acids in the mouth. Fresh fruits like apples and pears can satisfy a sweet tooth while also promoting saliva production, which naturally cleanses the mouth.
Be mindful of what your child drinks, too. Water is always the best choice, and sugary options like juice and fizzy drinks should be limited, as they contribute to cavities and erosion.
The Importance of Regular Dental Check-Ups
Routine dental visits are essential in maintaining your child’s oral health. Regular check-ups allow your dentist to catch any potential issues early, such as cavities, misaligned teeth, or gum problems. Early detection often means simpler, less invasive treatments.
At Dental Care Ireland, we recommend children visit the dentist at least twice a year. These visits are also an excellent opportunity for parents to discuss any concerns, from brushing techniques to the effects of thumb-sucking or pacifier use.
Considering Braces? Here’s What You Need to Know
As children grow, their teeth and jaws develop, sometimes resulting in misaligned teeth or bite issues. If your child’s teeth are crowded, crooked, or have spacing issues, it may be time to consider orthodontic treatment.
Braces are most commonly recommended during adolescence when the majority of adult teeth have come through, but younger children may also benefit from early orthodontic assessments. Early intervention can guide jaw growth and tooth eruption, potentially avoiding more complex treatment later on.
Modern braces are more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing than ever before. Options such as clear aligners or ceramic braces make the process less noticeable, which is often a significant concern for children and teenagers.
The duration of orthodontic treatment varies, but most children wear braces for one to three years. After braces, a retainer is usually necessary to keep teeth in their new position. Following your dentist’s or orthodontist’s advice is vital to ensure the best results.
Managing Dental Emergencies
Accidents happen, especially in the hustle and bustle of school life. Whether it’s a knocked-out tooth during PE or a sudden toothache, knowing how to handle dental emergencies is essential.
Retrieve the lost tooth and call your local practice straight away to arrange an emergency dental appointment. You should hold the tooth by the crown and avoid touching the root. Time is of the essence in these situations, and acting quickly can often save the tooth.
If your child complains of a toothache, visiting the dentist as soon as possible is important. Tooth pain can be a sign of various issues, from cavities to infections, and should not be ignored.
Mouthguards for Sports
If your child participates in sports, particularly contact sports like rugby, football, GAA, or hurling, a well-fitted mouthguard is essential. Mouthguards protect against dental injuries, such as chipped or broken teeth, and can reduce the risk of jaw injuries and concussions.
Custom-fitted mouthguards from your dentist offer the best protection and comfort. Unlike over-the-counter options, they are tailored to your child’s teeth and gums, ensuring a snug fit and better performance.
At Dental Care Ireland, we’re here to support your family’s dental needs with expert care across our 33 practices nationwide. Whether it’s time for a routine check-up, orthodontic consultation, or a custom-fitted mouthguard, our team is ready to help your child achieve their best smile this school year.

Summer Treats for Healthy Teeth
Summer is here, bringing with it warm weather, outdoor activities, and a variety of delicious seasonal foods. While enjoying your summer treats, it’s important to be mindful of how certain foods and beverages can impact your oral health. At Dental Care Ireland, we want to help you make the best choices for your teeth and gums during this sunny season. Here’s a guide to the best and worst summer treats for maintaining a healthy smile.
The Best Summer Treats for Your Teeth
1. Fresh Fruits and Vegetables
Summer is a fantastic time to indulge in a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. Crunchy produce like apples, carrots, and celery not only satisfy your hunger but also help clean your teeth by stimulating saliva production, which naturally washes away food particles and bacteria. Additionally, fruits like strawberries contain malic acid, which can naturally whiten your teeth.
2. Dairy Products
Dairy products such as milk, cheese, and yoghurt are excellent choices for your teeth. They are rich in calcium and phosphates, which help to strengthen tooth enamel and bones. Cheese, in particular, can help neutralise acids in the mouth, reducing the risk of tooth decay.
3. Nuts and Seeds
Nuts and seeds are a great source of vitamins and minerals essential for oral health. Almonds, for instance, provide calcium and protein while being low in sugar. Chewing on nuts can also stimulate saliva flow, which helps protect your teeth against decay.
4. Water
Water is undoubtedly the best beverage for your oral health, especially during the hot summer months. It helps keep you hydrated, washes away food particles, and prevents dry mouth. Fluoridated water, in particular, can strengthen your tooth enamel and prevent cavities.
The Worst Summer Treats for Your Teeth
1. Sugary Drinks
Sugary drinks like fizzy sodas, sports drinks, and sweetened iced teas are some of the worst culprits for tooth decay. The high sugar content feeds harmful bacteria in your mouth, leading to acid production that erodes tooth enamel. Additionally, the acidity of these beverages can further damage your teeth. If you do indulge, try to use a straw to minimise contact with your teeth and rinse your mouth with water afterwards.
2. Ice Cream and Frozen Treats
While ice cream is a popular summer treat, it is often loaded with sugar, which can contribute to tooth decay. Furthermore, the cold temperature can cause discomfort or sensitivity in some individuals. If you can’t resist, opt for sugar-free or low-sugar varieties and consume them in moderation.
3. Sticky Sweets
Sticky sweets like toffees, caramels, and gummy candies can cling to your teeth for prolonged periods, providing a feast for cavity-causing bacteria. These sweets are particularly harmful because they are difficult to remove through regular brushing and flossing. It’s best to limit your intake of these types of treats.
4. Citrus Fruits and Juices
While citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, and grapefruits are refreshing and packed with vitamins, their high acid content can erode tooth enamel over time. Citrus juices can be particularly harmful when consumed frequently. To protect your teeth, try to eat these fruits as part of a meal rather than on their own, and rinse your mouth with water afterwards.
Book a Scale and Polish for Added Benefit
In addition to maintaining good daily oral hygiene, consider booking a scale and polish at Dental Care Ireland for an extra boost to your summer smile. A professional scale and polish will remove any built-up plaque and tartar that regular brushing might miss, leaving your teeth feeling smooth and clean. This treatment not only helps prevent gum disease and tooth decay but also enhances the appearance of your teeth by removing surface stains. It’s a perfect way to ensure your smile is in top condition for all your summer activities and gatherings.
Tips for a Healthy Summer Smile
- Moderation is Key: Enjoy your favourite summer treats in moderation to reduce the risk of dental problems.
- Maintain Good Oral Hygiene: Brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss daily, and use a fluoride mouthwash to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
- Regular Dental Check-ups: Schedule regular dental check-ups with your local Dental Care Ireland practice to catch any potential issues early and receive professional cleaning.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your mouth moist and wash away food particles and bacteria.
By making mindful choices about the foods and beverages you consume, you can enjoy the delights of summer while keeping your smile bright and healthy. For more personalised advice, contact your nearest Dental Care Ireland practice.
Enjoy your summer and take good care of your teeth!
Dental Care Ireland Backs Trinity College Dublin’s DOVE Program: A Journey of Compassion and Care
Dental Care Ireland is delighted to announce its support for the Dental Overseas Voluntary Elective (DOVE) program at Trinity College Dublin. This year, a dedicated group of ten 4th-year dental students are preparing to embark on a meaningful journey to Tanzania and Nepal, where they will provide essential dental care to underserved communities. DOVE is committed to aiding underfunded hospitals and communities in low-income countries, and Dental Care Ireland is proud to contribute to this cause.
The Mission of DOVE
DOVE stands for Dental Overseas Voluntary Elective, an initiative focused on delivering dental care to populations in dire need. By mobilising passionate and skilled dental students, DOVE addresses immediate dental health issues and fosters long-term benefits through education and preventive care.
The 2024 Journey: Tanzania and Nepal
This year, the DOVE program will see its participants travel to two countries with significant dental care needs: Tanzania and Nepal. In these countries, access to dental services is limited, and many individuals suffer from preventable dental diseases due to a lack of resources and education.
The dental students will work in collaboration with local healthcare providers in underfunded hospitals and community clinics. They will offer a range of dental services, including:
- Preventative Care: Educating communities on oral hygiene practices to prevent dental diseases.
- Basic Dental Services: Performing procedures such as cleanings, fillings, and extractions to address common dental issues.
- Emergency Dental Services: Providing urgent care for dental emergencies to alleviate pain and prevent complications.
- Oral Hygiene Education: Conducting workshops to teach proper brushing and flossing techniques, as well as the importance of regular dental check-ups.
- Free Dental Supplies: Distributing toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other essential dental care products to promote long-term oral health.

Dental Care Ireland’s support of the DOVE program at Trinity College Dublin represents a powerful commitment to global health and education. This year’s mission to Tanzania and Nepal will not only bring essential dental care to communities in need but also empower a new generation of dentists with the skills and compassion necessary for their future careers. As these ten 4th-year students prepare for their journey, they carry with them the hope and promise of better dental health for the communities they will serve. Through this initiative, Dental Care Ireland and DOVE together make a lasting impact, one smile at a time.
