Overcoming Dental Anxiety with Sedation at Callan Dental
November 28th, 2024
At Dental Care Ireland’s Callan practice, we understand that for many, dental visits can be stressful. Whether it’s the fear of the procedure, the sound of the equipment, or a general anxiety about the dentist, these feelings can prevent people from seeking the care they need. That’s why we have sedation dentists who offer options to help make dental treatments more comfortable and stress-free.
Sedation Options for a Comfortable Experience
We provide two sedation methods to cater to different needs:
- Nitrous Oxide Sedation (Happy Air): This is a gas-based sedative that helps patients relax during their procedures. Administered via a mask, it wears off quickly, allowing you to resume your day shortly after treatment.
- IV Sedation: For those requiring a deeper level of relaxation, IV sedation is administered directly into the bloodstream, ensuring a more profound and anxiety-free experience.
Is Sedation Right for You?
Sedation is ideal for patients experiencing significant anxiety about their dental treatments. It can be used for a wide range of procedures, from routine cleanings to more complex surgeries, and is available to both adults and children (from around age 6, depending on suitability). During your consultation, your dentist will assess your medical history and personal needs to determine the best sedation option for you.
Preparing for Sedation
To ensure the best results, there are a few things to keep in mind before your appointment:
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours prior to treatment.
- Take prescribed medications as usual.
- Eat a light meal beforehand, avoiding fatty foods.
Additionally, please wear flat, comfortable shoes as you may feel unsteady after the procedure, and remove any nail varnish to allow for monitoring during treatment.
Aftercare and Recovery
After your sedation treatment, you’ll need to rest and recover:
- A responsible adult must accompany you to and from your appointment.
- Avoid driving, operating machinery, or caring for small children for 24 hours.
The effects of sedation typically wear off within 15-30 minutes, and there’s usually no feeling of nausea, making it a safer alternative to general anaesthesia.
