What Is Dental Tax Relief?

Dental tax relief is available in Ireland for a range of non-routine dental treatments. Relief is granted at the standard rate of income tax (currently 20%) and is claimed directly from Revenue. This relief is designed to help with the cost of necessary dental procedures that go beyond routine check-ups and preventative care.

What Dental Treatments Qualify?

Tax relief may be claimed on many advanced dental treatments, including:

Routine dental care such as check-ups, scale and polish, fillings, and extractions does not qualify for tax relief.

If you are unsure whether your treatment qualifies, our team will be happy to advise you.

How Much Can I Claim?

You can claim 20% of the qualifying treatment cost back from Revenue. For example:

  • A qualifying dental treatment costing €2,000 could result in a tax refund of €400.

There is no upper limit on the amount you can claim, provided the treatment qualifies under Revenue guidelines.

How to Claim Dental Tax Relief

Claiming dental tax relief is straightforward:

  1. Complete your dental treatment and pay your dentist in full.
  2. Ask us for a MED 2 form – this is the official Dental Expenses Claim Form.
  3. Dental Care Ireland will complete and sign the dentist’s section of the form.
  4. You submit the completed MED 2 form to Revenue.
  5. Revenue will process your claim and issue any refund due.

Claims can be made after treatment is completed and must be submitted within the Revenue time limits.

Can I Claim for Treatment Abroad?

In some cases, dental treatment carried out outside Ireland may qualify for tax relief, provided it meets Revenue criteria and appropriate documentation is supplied. Revenue makes the final decision on all claims.
