Fillings

Fillings are a relatively common dental treatment undertaken to repair small and developing cavities.

Amalgam fillings are the most commonly used filling today, and are made from common metals such as silver, tin, copper and zinc. Amalgam fillings are strong and durable, but mostly used for back teeth due to their noticeable colour.

Composite fillings are tooth-coloured and made from hard, moulded plastic. Once fitted, we will ensure the filling is in line with your other teeth and get you to clench your teeth to ensure your bite is consistent and even.

What happens when you get fillings?

Getting fillings is a straightforward and relatively quick procedure. Your dentist in Dublin will administer a local anaesthetic, after which we will clean out the decay from the affected tooth and then replace it with the amalgam or composite filling.

Why are fillings needed?

Fillings are needed to repair decay or damage to a tooth. They stick to teeth so they are commonly used to repair chipped or broken teeth. After inserting the filling, we will be able to advise on how to treat the new filling after leaving us.

What happens after the treatment?

Generally, there isn’t a lot to do after the treatment by your dentist in Dublin. When fillings are particularly large and deep, we will ask you to follow the tooth’s progress over time. We will also schedule a review of the restoration before you leave.
