What Is Dental Tax Relief?
Dental tax relief allows you to claim back a portion of the cost of non-routine dental treatment. Relief is provided at the standard rate of income tax (20%) and is processed by Revenue. This relief applies to necessary dental procedures that go beyond routine or preventative care.

You may be entitled to tax relief for a variety of advanced dental treatments, such as:
Routine services including examinations, fillings, extractions, and scale and polish treatments are not eligible for tax relief.

How Much Tax Relief Can I Receive?
Tax relief is available at 20% of the qualifying cost. For example:
- If a qualifying treatment costs €1,500, you may be able to claim €300 back from Revenue.
There is no maximum claim amount, provided the treatment meets Revenue requirements.
Treatment Outside Ireland
In certain circumstances, dental treatment received abroad may qualify for tax relief. All claims are assessed by Revenue, and supporting documentation will be required.
How Do I Claim?
The process for claiming dental tax relief is simple:
- Complete your dental treatment and settle the cost in full.
- Request a MED 2 form from your Dental Care Ireland practice.
- We will complete the dentist’s section of the form.
- Submit the completed MED 2 form to Revenue.
- Revenue will assess your claim and issue any refund due.
