Why Do Dentures Break?
Dentures naturally weaken over time, mainly due to wear and age-related fit issues. As dentures loosen, they may rock in your mouth, causing stress that eventually leads to cracks or breaks. Regular relining or replacing dentures every five years can help prevent damage.
Make an EnquiryCommon Causes of Broken Dentures:
1. Daily Wear and Tear: Chewing, temperature changes, and saliva can gradually weaken denture materials.
2. Jawbone Changes: Natural bone loss over time may cause dentures to fit poorly. Loose dentures rock with each bite, placing uneven pressure on the acrylic and leading to breaks.
3. Accidents: Dropping dentures or knocking them against surfaces can create weak spots that break months later.
4. Age of Dentures: Dentures have a lifespan of around five years. Over time, materials deteriorate and become prone to fractures.
5. Isolated Tooth Damage: Individual denture teeth are vulnerable to breaking due to concentrated chewing pressure. Options like a Chrome Denture, bridge, or implant can strengthen these areas.
What to Do (and Not Do) When Your Denture Breaks
Do not attempt DIY repairs. Using inappropriate glue or tools can worsen damage, affect bite alignment, and create health risks. Some repair kits contain harsh chemicals that can make your dentures impossible to fix professionally.
Professional denture repair is the safest solution. A qualified technician can assess the damage and restore your dentures, sometimes requiring an impression for accuracy.
Keep in mind:
- Repairs restore function but cannot improve the original fit.
- Your denture may feel unusual initially; this typically resolves within an hour as your gums adjust.
- Contact us if you have questions or are considering a replacement.
