Meet The Ballincollig Dentists & Team

Our team of highly experienced and caring professionals offers a full range of dental treatments, including root canal, orthodontics, dentures and extractions within our practice. No matter how complex or how simple your dental requirements are, we will have a solution for you. Our team is also experienced in treating patients of all ages, as well as nervous patients.

Dr Billy Waters started as a scientist graduating with a Biomedical Science degree in 1998, and completed a postgraduate higher diploma in 1999. Developing his interest in matters medical he studied dentistry in UCC graduating with honours in Dental Surgery in 2004. While working in general dental practice he undertook postgraduate dental studies being awarded MFDS by the Royal College of Surgeons in 2009. During this time he developed an interest in dental implants and undertook a Masters in Implant Dentistry at the University of Warwick graduating in 2011. During this time he treated patients in Prof. Stuart Harding’s dental implant suite in Harley Street, London. He and his associates operate a  general dental practice at the Cork Dental Clinic.

When not working in general practice Dr Waters operates a specialist dental implant practice at the Cork Dental Implant Clinic in Cork. He also maintains close links with Cork University Dental School & Hospital where he works as a clinical tutor, and continues to work closely with Prof. Duncan Sleeman in his implant work.

Dr. Marian Cottrell graduated with honours from UCC in 2010. Best Overall Student Award and Oral Surgery Award. Before returning home to Cork she spent three years working in General Practice in London. Whilst working there she completed a course in Surgical and Implant Dentistry in the Eastman Dental Institute, London. She has also completed various aesthetic dental courses in the London Dental Education Centre. Dr. Cottrell was awarded a MFD from the Royal College of Surgeons in 2013.

Dr. Marian Cottrell started in Cork Dental Clinic in 2013. She focuses on providing a high standard of clinical care to her patients in friendly and comfortable surroundings. Dr. Cottrell provides tailored examinations and treatment plans which are specific to patient concerns, especially nervous patients. She is happy to take the time to explain and plan various treatment options for each patient. Dr. Cottrell prioritises patient care and clinical need.

Dr. Cottrell is committed to continuous professional development and frequently attends lectures and courses around Ireland and in the UK. Dr. Cottrell also assists Dr. Waters on some of his complex implant cases.

Outside of practice Marian enjoys playing camogie and keeping fit. Marian has also completed dental charity work in Ghana.

Aisling graduated with Honors from University College Cork in 2019. Following her graduation, Aisling spent some time working in Waterford before relocating back home to Cork. Aisling performs a wide range of dental treatments and has a particular interest in pediatric dentistry. With a commitment to creating a positive dental experience, Aisling is passionate in providing a relaxed environment, especially for nervous patients and children. Aisling’s gentle approach to treatment aims to put patients at ease and ensure they are as comfortable as possible during their visits.
Aisling is committed to continuous professional development and regularly attends courses to keep up to date with the latest advancements in dentistry.  Outside of dentistry Aisling has a keen love of sport playing both Camogie and Gaelic football.

Dr Alana graduated from UCC in 2020. Following graduation she spent several years working in private practice in Ireland and Sydney, Australia. Her international experience has contributed to a well-rounded clinical approach and a wide range of interests within general dentistry. These include; digital dentistry, composite bonding, clear aligners, endodontics and facial aesthetics.

Alana has completed postgraduate training including Membership in the Faculty of Dentistry (MFD RCSI) and a Diploma in Primary Care Dentistry (DipPCD RCSI). She has explored further training in Invisalign, composite bonding, biomimetic dentistry and facial aesthetics.

When she isn’t caring for her patients Alana enjoys sea swimming, yoga or pilates and spending time with family and friends!

Dr Divya Sweeney graduated from the University of Melbourne with a biomedical science degree in 2012. She wanted to be a dentist since she was 16 and managed to fulfil her dream by graduating from UCC with honours. During her degree, she received the Henry Schein award for endodontics and the NUI Dr H H Stewart medical scholarship.

After a number of years of working in the beautiful Kerry countryside, she returned to the real capital to pursue advanced techniques in dentistry opening the doors to facial aesthetics and implantology.

Dr Divya Sweeney has completed further training in anti-wrinkle injections in the London School of facial aesthetics and is our in-house facial aesthetics provider. She joined our practice in 2021 and is currently pursuing a postgraduate diploma in aesthetic dentistry.

Dr Divya is great with nervous patients, taking her time to ensure that making her patients feel at ease during their treatment. In her free time, she loves running, hill walking, sea swimming and of course trying to chase after her dog Rua..

Dr. Clíodhna Dineen (BDS (NUI), Dip PCD (RCSI)) is a local of Ovens, Co. Cork and graduated from University College Cork with an Honors Bachelor of Dental Surgery Degree.

Dr. Clíodhna Dineen’s diverse dental experience spans nationally and internationally, in both public and private sectors. After graduating, she decided to move to the beautiful city of Edinburgh, Scotland. Here, Dr. Dineen worked in a brimming NHS practice, affording her a broad experience in addressing the individual needs of patients. Following this early chapter, she enjoyed practicing in a well-established private practice in Killarney, Co. Kerry. Most recently, Dr. Dineen gained great insight into Australian dentistry, where she practiced in a prominent private clinic in the heart of Melbourne City. With a desire to move home, she returned to Cork earlier this year and is looking forward to building lasting relationships with local patients and providing them with a comfortable, anxiety-free dental experience.

Dr. Dineen considers it a privilege to care for her patients. She is a gentle and compassionate dentist, who enjoys all facets of general dentistry, with a particular interest in emergency dentistry, cosmetic dentistry and restorative implants. Above all, she is committed to giving every patient confidence when they smile.

Dr. Dineen actively enhances her education and training, attending the latest courses and keeping up-to-date with new readings. She completed a Diploma in Primary Care Dentistry, RCSI and has pursued post-graduate training in London, in the field of anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers.

Outside of practice, Clíodhna likes to travel, follow sport and spend time with family and friends.

Annie graduated from University College Cork with a bachelor of Dental Surgery in 2012. Having spent some time working and travelling in Australia, Annie moved to Liverpool where she worked in both private and NHS practices for 2 years, before returning back to Ireland in 2015.
Dr. Downey has joined our team as a general Dental Practitioner and is working as Marian’s associate, and will be working on a range of procedures at our clinic including general and cosmetic dentistry.

Dr Grainne Kieran completed her Dental Degree in University College Cork in 1997. Following graduation, she has worked primarily in General Practice in Ireland and England for over 25 years. This has included providing a wide range of care to her patients in the fields of Restorative, Prosthetic, Paediatric Dentistry and Oral Surgery.

She also spent 2 years as a Dental Surgeon in the HSE providing dental care for children and adults which included treating patients with special and complex needs. Gráinne completed a Diploma in Postgraduate Dental Studies in Bristol in 2011 which included the extensive study of Prosthetic Dentistry, Periodontology and Oral Medicine.

Gráinne continuously attends lectures, courses, conferences to keep up to date with the latest techniques and advances in dentistry. She looks forward to looking after you and your family at Cork Dental Clinic.

Dr. Caroline O’Dwyer is a specialist orthodontist with over 10 years of dental experience. She completed a Clinical Doctorate in Orthodontics and is a registered specialist with the Irish Dental Council. She is a member of the Orthodontic society of Ireland,

Caroline has contributed to orthodontic research focusing on how orthodontics improves the quality of life of children, their siblings as well as their parents.

Caroline qualified as a dentist from University College Cork (Hons) in 2012.

During her time there she received many awards for her clinical and academic achievements, most notably the Orthodontic Society of Ireland Medal for her results in final year. 

Upon graduating, Caroline was then selected for General Professional Training with the Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency, .

Dr. O’Dwyer has also worked as a Senior House officer in Maxillo-facial surgery in the Ulster Hospital, and as a Senior House officer in oral surgery in the Dublin Dental University Hospital, in Trinity College Dublin.

After developing a passion for straightening teeth, Caroline completed her specialist training in orthodontics. This involved three years training on a full time course in the dental hospital in Cork’s CUH. Caroline was awarded her Clinical Doctorate in Orthodontics from University College Cork (Hons) and Membership in Orthodontics from the Orthodontic Society of Ireland.

Áine first entered the dental world in 2015 when she graduated as a dental nurse.

From there Áine went on to study dental hygiene in University College Cork. In 2018 she graduated with honours and was awarded the Kin Award for the highest clinical grades.

Áine likes to take the gentle approach when treating patients and puts a big emphasis on a good home care routine.

She continues her own professional development to ensure patients have the most up to date treatment and information.

Áine joined the practice in 2021 and outside of work she likes to travel , exercise and meet up with family and friends.


Sonya Cronin is a Dental Hygienist at Dental Care Ireland Ballincollig, Cork.

Sonya graduated as a Dental Nurse in 2009 from Cork University Dental School and Hospital. After spending a year dental nursing in a specialist clinic in Australia, she was inspired to further her studies from working closely with a Periodontist.

She graduated with Honours as a Dental Hygienist in 2014 from Cork University Dental School and Hospital. Sonya joined our team in May 2016 and has been a wonderful addition to the practice.

She has a keen interest in periodontal disease treatment and implant maintenance. She especially encourages nervous patients to attend, as her understanding and helpful nature makes for a pleasant experience.

In 2015 she was a monthly contributor to Irish Dentistry Magazine, and regularly attends dental conferences and lectures.
Outside of work, she enjoys keeping fit.

Lisa graduated with a Dental Nursing Diploma at Cork University Dental School and Hospital in 2014. She joined Billy before graduation, having completed work experience throughout secondary school and college with us, and has become an invaluable member to the team. Her role is now as a hygienist after graduating with first class honours in 2021. Her caring rapport and reliability makes her a hit with patients and staff alike.

Gillian began her dental career in 2010, graduating from Trinity College Dublin as a Dental nurse. After 10 years working as a dental nurse in many general and specialised practices in both Ireland and Australia. Gillian’s interest in preventative dentistry grew, this motivated her to seek a more hands on position within the dental team. This led her back to study in UCC where she graduated with honours in 2020, as well as receiving the Dental Public Health award. 

Gillian is a registered member of the Irish Dental Council and the Irish Dental Hygienist Association, and frequently updates her skills and knowledge as part of her continuing professional development. 

She is committed to helping patients achieve and maintain healthy, confident smiles through a focus on prevention, education and personalised care. 

Known for her friendly and gentle approach, Gillian ensures every visit is a comfortable and positive experience. 

In her spare time, she enjoys walking, listening to music and spending time with family and friends.

Hi I’m Lauren, from Co. Wexford. I have always been passionate about health, well-being, and helping others feel their best. I graduated from Waterford Institute of Technology in 2021 with a BA in Health Promotion, before pursuing further qualifications in oral health.

After working as a dental nurse in Waterford, I advanced my expertise through the Dental Hygiene Programme at University College Cork, where I received an award for the highest achievement in Dental Health Education.

I take pride in providing gentle, patient-focused care and believes every visit should be a positive, comfortable experience. I strives to make every patient feel relaxed, understood, and confident in their oral hygiene care.
