Does Whitening Toothpaste Work?

One of the most common questions we’re asked here at Northumberland Dental Care is; does whitening toothpaste actually work? The answer is yes, and no.  Let me explain; there are two types of staining that affect the colour of your teeth: Intrinsic Staining Extrinsic Staining Therefore, yes – they can remove extrinsic staining but no – they will not remove intrinsic staining. What is intrinsic staining? Intrinsic staining happens internally and can be caused by a multitude of factors including; medication taken as a child, trauma or excessive fluoride consumption. As dentine is darker than enamel, as we age, we wear down enamel and expose more dentine; therefore, our teeth appear darker. This is why the neck of the tooth often looks darker as gum recession causes dentine to become exposed, giving the tooth a darker appearance. The only way to remove intrinsic staining is by bleaching your teeth through professional products administered by your dentist containing

Teeth whitening: ‘The whole procedure is so easy from start to finish’

Teeth whitening with a dentist is the most effective method, so we asked Northumberland Dental Care patient Lara Battigelli to tell us how it transformed her smile People often wonder if teeth whitening toothpaste or kits bought in chemists work as well as a professional treatment. Lara Battigelli, a patient of Dr Jennifer Collins, our Clinical Lead General Dentist here at Northumberland Dental Care, tells us about her results. Why did you decide to get your teeth whitened? I chose to get my teeth whitened because although my teeth were naturally white and bright, I had white spots on my teeth (self-confessed toothpaste eater as a child). Jennifer recommended teeth whitening as although it would temporarily make my white spots whiter, a few days post-bleaching, my own teeth would match more closely and the whiter patches would appear less obvious. Had you tried toothpastes and whitening kits from the chemist? Over the years I have used whitening toothpaste, Crest strips

Dental crowns ‘transformed how I felt about my teeth’

Crowns are becoming an increasingly popular method for fixing broken or damaged teeth, but what does it entail? We asked one of our own patients how they felt about the treatment Garvan Grant thought the issues with his broken teeth couldn’t be fixed but after a consultation with Dr Jennifer Collins, Clincal Lead General Dentist at Northumberland Dental Care, he had two crowns fitted. He talks to us about the process and the results. The problems I’ve always taken relatively good care of my teeth but, like most people, they were far from perfect. This was down to general wear and tear, as well as a fondness for good food, red wine, gallons of coffee and the odd cigarette or two when I was younger. (Please don’t tell my daughters about this!) In particular, my two front teeth were damaged or cracked in some way and very discoloured. This had actually led me to be very self-conscious about my smile to the extent that I found myself using my upper lip to cover up my broken front tee
