What is Teeth Bonding?
In this month’s Q&A, Dr Jennifer Collins, our lead general dentist, answers some frequently asked questions about teeth bonding
Q: What is teeth bonding?
A: Teeth bonding, also known as dental or composite bonding, is a simple and effective way to resolve minor teeth issues using a specially formulated composite material that is matched to the colour of your teeth.
Q: Why is teeth bonding used?
A: Teeth bonding is useful if you are experiencing a minor issue with one or several of your teeth, such as small cracks, chips, gaps or discolouration. It can improve the appearance of a tooth by restoring or enhancing both its shape and size.
Q: How do I know if I am a suitable candidate?
A: Your dentist will assess your suitability based on the overall health of your teeth and gums. Bonding is primarily for patients seeking a cosmetic solution for teeth that are otherwise healthy. It is not suitable for repairing very weak or crooked teeth.
Q: How long does the treatment take?
A: Dental bonding treatment generally takes less than an hour, and is typically completed in a single dental visit. It is one of the quickest and most cost-effective cosmetic dental treatments available.
Q: What does the treatment involve?
A: During treatment, the surface of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and primed before gently adding composite to the required areas. The composite resin used in bonding can be shaped and polished to match the surrounding teeth. No anaesthesia is required.
Q: How does bonding differ to crowns or veneers?
A: Unlike ceramic crowns or veneers, bonding does not alter the structure of your teeth and typically does not involve removal of the tooth surface. Rather, it adds a composite to existing teeth where needed.
Q: How long will dental bonding last?
A: With proper care and maintenance, dental bonding can last up to five years. Bonding is not as durable as other treatments such as crowns or veneers, and may need to be repaired in the future.
Q: Will my teeth require special care after treatment?
A: To prevent stains, it is important to avoid cigarette smoke and minimise certain foods and drinks such as tea, coffee and red wine. Composites should be brushed and flossed daily. It is also recommended that patients attend a dental hygienist every six months.
