What are dental implants?

Dental implants are artificial roots that serve as an anchor to a crown, bridge, or dentures. It is crucially important that the right material is used for a dental implant as it will effectively become part of your jawbone. At Northumberland Dental Care, we use brands such as Straumann who use a titanium material as it is biocompatible and non-allergenic.

What happens during an appointment to fit dental implants?

We will start by assessing your oral and dental health, as well as your suitability for dental implants, including whether one or more are needed, whether bone or tissue grafting is required and how long the healing process will take. The dental implant treatment can take anywhere between six weeks and six months, depending on your own needs. After the implant is placed and has healed, we will recommend whether you should fit a denture, crown, or bridge.

Why are dental implants needed?

When you lose teeth, the bone structure that was supporting them weakens and shrink away, leading to bone loss. Dental implants act to prevent this bone loss and ensure your mouth’s structure is maintained.

There are various reasons why we may recommend dental implants:

  • Single implant restoration happens if you are missing one tooth. In this case, we generally recommend fitting an implant and ceramic crown.
  • If you are missing adjacent teeth, dental implants could be used to support a bridge. This protects remaining healthy teeth and also prevents further bone and tooth loss.
  • If you are missing many or all of your teeth, dental implants can anchor a denture to ensure it is securely attached. Adhesives are not used to provide maximum comfort and usability.

What happens after dental implants are fitted?

Once the implant is placed into the jawbone, you typically will need to wait until the gum has healed to get your permanent crown, bridge or dentures is positioned. During this time a temporary denture can be placed for appearance if needed. This also allows time for bone growth around the implant, securing it in your jawbone.

After this wait, you will be invited back to the clinic where your permanent crown, bridge, or dentures will be placed, leaving you with your perfect smile!
