Wisdom tooth extraction is a common dental operation which many people need to undergo in their lifetimes. It is relatively straightforward and can now be done with very little pain or discomfort.

How do I know if my wisdom teeth need to be extracted?

There are several signs to watch out for if you think your wisdom teeth may be problematic. These include:

  • Swollen and tender gums
  • Pain when biting or chewing
  • Soreness at the back of your jaw

What are wisdom teeth?

The third and last set of molars at the back of your mouth are known as your wisdom teeth. They normally appear in people in their late teens or early 20s. Often, they cause no problems to people and can in fact be quite useful. In others, they may not appear at all.

However, when they do appear, they can sometimes be misaligned and affect your other teeth. This can cause problems including discomfort, pain and swollen gums.

How will I know if my wisdom teeth need to be treated?

If you are suffering the symptoms mentioned above, it is worth booking a check-up with your dentist who will advise you what to do.

I’m having problems with my wisdom teeth. What should I do?

As always in situations like this, it is best to get professional advice as soon as possible. If your dentist sees a long-term problem, he or she will generally recommend extraction.

Is extraction or surgery the only solution for impacted wisdom teeth?

This is usually the best long-term solution. However, dentists can offer some short-term pain relief for impacted wisdom teeth. This would include remedies such as using a mouth rinse made up of water and salt or a dental product such as Corsodyl to kill the bacteria and reduce pain.

Also, pain relief can be achieved temporarily through over-the-counter pills, such as Ibuprofen, or by using a numbing dental gel containing benzocaine.
