Understanding Dental Tax Relief
Dental tax relief is available for a range of specialist and non-routine dental treatments. Revenue provides relief at the standard income tax rate of 20%, which is refunded once a valid claim is approved. This relief does not apply to everyday dental care, but to treatments that are medically necessary and more complex.
Covered treatmentsEligible Dental Treatments
You can claim tax relief on many advanced dental procedures, including:
- Crowns and bridges
- Veneers
- Dental implants
- Root canal procedures
- Gum and periodontal treatments
- Orthodontic care, such as braces
Standard treatments such as check-ups, routine fillings, extractions, and cleaning treatments do not qualify.
If you are unsure whether your treatment is eligible, our team can guide you.

How Much Can Be Claimed?
You can claim back 20% of the cost of qualifying dental treatment. For example:
- A qualifying procedure costing €2,500 could result in a tax refund of €500.
There is no cap on the amount you can claim, provided Revenue criteria are met.
Dental Treatment Abroad
In some cases, dental treatment received outside Ireland may be eligible for tax relief. Revenue will determine eligibility and may request additional documentation.
