Below, we have explained the dental examination process at Dental Care Ireland Molesworth.

The Dental Examination Process

Firstly, your dentist will ask you some medical questions if you are a new patient. You will also be asked to complete a medical history questionnaire. Existing patients may be asked to confirm any changes since their last visit to Dental Care Ireland Molesworth. This is to ensure that your dentist is aware of any changes to your medical history before continuing with any dental treatments.

During your examination your dentist will look at your mouth both inside and out. Your dentist will check not only your teeth, but your gums, tongue, cheeks, roof of your mouth and floor of your mouth. Any restorations you may have had (fillings/crowns) will also be assessed to make sure they are still effective. Your dentist will also look at your bite and jaw joint.

Gums

To examine your gum health, your dentist will use a round headed instrument called a periodontal probe. Assessing your gum health is just as important as checking your teeth, as your gums act as the support structure for your teeth. Gum disease is also extremely common, so it’s important that your gums are examined thoroughly.

Occasionally, your dentist may require an x-ray of your teeth as part of a dental examination. These small, low dosage images can be necessary to better assess your tooth/teeth structure, supporting socket bone and existing restorations (fillings/crowns) etc. Your dentist may also require a large, full mouth x-ray called an OPG. It is important that you inform your dentist if you are pregnant before you have any x-rays taken.

Your dentist may suggest that you have your teeth cleaned during your dental examination, either with the dentist themselves or with a hygienist. A simple scale and polish procedure can be important to better assess your teeth and gums. Occasionally, plaque and tartar can build up on teeth making the assessment of teeth and the surrounding gums more challenging.

What Happens After A Dental Check Up?

Once you have completed your dental examination, a treatment plan can be created if required. This plan will list all treatment options that you may require, along with the costs and number of dental appointments required. A printed copy of this treatment plan will be given to you to take home or will be emailed to you. Your dentist will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Recall Dental Appointments

Following your dental examination, your dentist will recommend when you should return for your next check-up. This is known as your recall appointment and is based on your individual oral health needs.

For many patients, this may be every 6 to 12 months. However, if you require closer monitoring – for example, if you are prone to gum disease or tooth decay – your dentist may advise more frequent visits.

If your check-up does not require any immediate treatment, maintaining regular recall appointments is still essential. These routine visits allow us to monitor your oral health, detect any changes early, and help prevent more complex dental issues from developing in the future.

Our reception team will keep your details on file and will contact you when you are due for your next appointment, making it easy to stay on track with your dental care.

If at any stage you experience discomfort, have concerns, or feel you need to be seen sooner, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Our team will always do their best to accommodate you as quickly as possible.
