As Northumberland Dental Care has now added general dentistry to the services it offers, you can get all treatments, including specialist care, in one location<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are plenty of benefits to having a general dentist in the same location as specialists, as each patient\u2019s case can be discussed with colleagues and treatment plans developed as part of a team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New approach<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the recent rebranding from the Northumberland Institute of Dental Medicine to Northumberland Dental Care, we have put additional focus on providing general treatments to our patients in conjunction with the specialist care for which we are renowned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This approach means that patients can have all their needs looked after under one roof without having to attend a specialist in a different practice. We believe this is not only very convenient for our patients but also results in better long-term care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018One-stop shop\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our practice here in Northumberland Dental Care in Dublin 4 often works as a \u201cone-stop shop\u201d for our patients. If they present with a particular problem that a general dentist wouldn\u2019t normally deal with, that dentist can immediately refer the patient to one of his or her colleagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe general dentists and the specialist dentists work very closely together here in Northumberland Dental Care, so we are able to formulate treatment plans together. This is very beneficial for patients,\u201d says Dr Jennifer Collins, Clinical Lead General Dentist at Northumberland Dental Care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs we are all located in the same building, we can discuss patients\u2019 needs easily and forward relevant information to our colleagues in a very efficient way. Referrals are obviously done more easily when they are to your expert colleagues in a different part of the practice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dental implants<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are missing one or more teeth, your dentist may recommend that you have dental implants<\/a> fitted. This specialist treatment entails having the implants \u2013 or \u2018artificial roots\u2019 \u2013 fitted so that they can work as an anchor for crowns<\/a>, bridges or dentures<\/a>. The implants effectively become part of your jaw. Our specialists use titanium<\/strong> for implants as it is both biocompatible and non-allergenic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Endodontics<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Endodontics<\/a> \u2013 or root canal surgery \u2013 is an advanced form of treatment whose aim is to preserve teeth that have decayed significantly. Endodontic treatment is done using a local anaesthetic here in Northumberland Dental Care and is generally done over the course of one or two visits. It involves removing any infected pulp and then refilling the dental canals with a sealing material which prevents re-infection. Our specialists then fill the crown with a tooth-coloured material so it is not noticeable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oral surgery<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In some cases, our dentists will be unable to treat or save a particular tooth. They will then refer the patient to our oral surgeon<\/a> who will perform an extraction. These types of extractions are also most often needed to deal with impacted wisdom teeth<\/a> which can cause pain and discomfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oral surgeons also perform bone grafting which is used to replace missing bone. Bone tissue can regenerate in the mouth if allowed the space to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oral surgery can be done under local anaesthetic, general anaesthetic (with a hospital) or intravenous injection. Our specialist teams will also give you detailed instructions before and after any surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sedation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dental sedation<\/a> often depends on the patient. If it makes you, our patient, more comfortable, then we can use sedation. Conscious sedation, which is done intravenously, will relax you during treatment. While sedated, we will also monitor you constantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If, on the other hand, you require a general anaesthetic, we will work with a hospital to provide you with this type of sedation for whatever specialist treatment you require.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Orthodontics<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your dentist believes you need orthodontic treatment<\/a> to correct misaligned or crooked teeth, he or she will refer you to our specialist orthodontic team for treatment. While orthodontic treatment used to be thought of as being just for adolescents, people of all ages are now using it to straighten their teeth both as a cosmetic treatment and also for strengthening overall oral health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
